This little iron object is 1 inch wide x 5/8 inch tall x 1/2 inch thick . My cheap digital scale says it weighs 2 oz. The monogram doesn't seem deep enough to be used as a wax seal . The maker mark on the side says : John Sellers And Sons Shefield England . There is a large letter S between the words . Any info ? Thanks !

John Sellers was a cutlery manufacturer operating from 151 Arundel Street, Sheffield. He also manufactured steel and copper plates for engravers. The company had an office in New York in order to supply the American market.

The corporate mark of the firm was granted in 1838 and was a dagger entwined with the initial S.

In my opinion, it appears to be an engraving (printing) stamp for embossing letterheads, and the like.

The only reason to make this comment is that I had a similar embossing stamp tool made for my stationary many years ago.

A possible elimination process is to show it to a engraver or printer for their opinion.
