I did a very small amount of time digging and detecting left handed. I got restless. I have my right hand and wrist wrapped up so I am definately not using it.

I found this V nickel. You can barely make out the light light head and a few stars. Is there a way to clean these up a little Please?

Distilled water perhaps? Just want to know the date really. IF that is even feasable, I realize its mostly a plug LOL

Thanks again for the reads I get from all you my friends,

Very nice! :D

I can't imagine that distilled water or olive oil could hurt a coin at all, as long as you aren't rubbing it...but I know very little about cleaning or preservation of coins.

WooHooo!!!!

Finally a score....wtg Post!

Olive oil is a total waste of time in my book, try electralysis using very low volt (big square battery).

Hey - congrats on the find, keep 'em coming.

;D ;D

brush lightly with a soft bristle brass brush. Sears Hardward has em cheap...they look like a brass toothbrush...brass is softer than the nickle. It'll brighten it right up.

A Dremel and SandPaper disc...scrub the hell out of it! ;D

I appreciate the responses. I thought perhaps I would go with the soft brass brush since I don't really have the dremel in the budget atm. But LOL Sears and all the hardware stores or toystores (thought perhaps because of hobbies) plus walmart did not carry the soft brass brush.

Will try to order one and see how it turns out.

Thank you all,

a vinegar and salt solution will change the color from reddish brown to a color that more closely resembles a nickel. it still will be kinda dull and grainy looking though.

Geez, postal, I can't find one-na those with my right hand !!!

No way, that would destroy it. I have a Dremmel tool and would never think of using it on coins.

Postalrevnant, Electrolisys will not work on nickle.Vinegar will turn it a light tan or white if left too long.I've found a lot of nickles in this condition and they're pretty well hopeless of bringing them back to anything resembling their state.Your best bet is as danimal said, a soft brass brush and some light scrubbing. If you put it in olive oil for a couple days it will soften the green stuff so you may not have to scrub as much.Normally I wouldn't suggest scrubbing with anything but I don't think you can really hurt that one much. Most of those V's aren't worth all that much anyway especially in that grade.I admire you though for not letting a bum right arm stop you from doing what you obviously love! That's all, Bootstrap

Ive just been putting vaseline on mine it softens up the dirt and wont hunt the coin. Nickels are so easy to damage I'd be very carfull. I used vaseline on the three V's and a buffalo I found last week. No damage and they looked better.

Another treasure hunter with a great day...Congrats..

Postal, even with a bad arm you go detectoring. RIGHT ON!!!! You are my hero!! :-*

Way to go Post!!! Congrats on the find!

Nana :)

1 handed, 2 handed.........no handed!.............v-nickel is good lol

Thanks for all the great replies. Yes I am a determined person most of the time.

I completely agree that this V is pretty much toast. I would be happy to be able to see what the date was though. Since the brass brush could not be found will get the vinegar and give it a shot. The coin is toast.

Since 2 months ago I have been keeping track of all my MD finds by date. Not mintmark though. Even the clad. I plan to keep this Excel spreadsheet and just add new years. Calculate it so that one page keeps a total by coin and year for all the years I MD. And of course seperate pages for each year. SO just interesting in seeing if I can pull a date on this one. IF not will just have to be a tally in the unreadable Nickel column. It can be #2 and join a Buffalo LOL.

Thanks again,

I beg to differ on the electrolysis I have used it on a '39 Nickel and it worked great! In fact thats what many use it for but not pennies!
Happy Hunting!

Thanks Dan, I'll try that trick myself. I have never found anything that helps a V nickel or even a badly worn Buffalo or even a 2 cent piece. Maybe this will work. I usually leave them alone, if I can read the date. Washing them always made them worse.

Thanks for the tip, HH,Ringfinder
