Small point

Walked for about an hour after work, first field find of the year is this nice small point. Not sure of type, it has a pretty small base.


Picked up this piece of debitage because the material really stood out, after looking at it saw it had a little work around half of the piece, with a shell fossil on the other side where there looks to have been a fracture. I'm thinking they didn't know the fossil was in there which created a weak spot when they were knapping, or possible a thumb scraper? thats my guess. Looks like quarts in it too, haven't found any material like this before.


Haven't been out much as the weather has been pretty whacky here,but I think spring is creeping in here soon. I see a lot of you guys killing it lately which is awesome, keep it up!

I'm from Upstate! Spent my summers on Cayuga Lake growing up but did not know about arrowheads. It turns out that my father and his cousins found tons as kids. There was even a tribe down by me in Virginia that relocated to Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca way back in the day. I worked there summers in College. Had I known I am quite sure little "work" would have been done!

I love the fingerlakes area of NY such a beautiful, rich environment. I live about 20 minutes north of cayuga lake and ice fish there every year. There is certainly a lot of native history in this area, Cayugas all along the east side of the lake and Senecas all along the west side. I haven't walked any fields around cayuga lake because I believe the nations have a lot of the land locked up on the east side, but have walked a few creeks around the lake, including great gully (home of cayuga castle), but never really found many artifacts.
I have been to and walked buttermilk falls! it was several years ago, way before I knew about finding artifacts, its a really awesome place to check out. Small world!

no fossils at all? I don't have much geological knowledge, but I'm slowly learning, mainly for information on paleo indians, but I find tons of shell fossil clumps in my fields, actually found a trilobyte and crinoid stem in one stone in great gully (mentioned above).

I'd love to find a fossil but my limited research told me that there are none in CT. We do have dinosaur footprints at Dinosaur State Park (where else?) but I was very surprised to read that there are no others. Hopefully I am, as usual, wrong. Doesn't Lake Erie have fossils in the slate along the shoreline?
