Anyone know what kind of rock this is made from? And maybe what it's worth?

Whatever it is, my Grandmother had a large ashtray from mexico carved from this stuff back in the 60's - 70's.

Yup, onyx. My grandmother had the same thing. Green with a guy in a sombrero sitting under a cactus.

That is calcite "onyx". Not a true onyx, which is a cryptocrystalline quartz. The Mexicans have a huge industry carving touristy trinkets of that stuff.

I believe the material question is 100% solved. Worth no more then maybe 10 bucks ?... I see old ashtrays and sculptures made of this rock in antique shops and flea markets and they're asking around 8 to 10 on those pieces. Very often less in thrift stores.
