It appears that you have found a bit of limestone with an external mold of a bivalve, perhaps a Pectin.

Cool beans! Can't wait to google your info! Thank you!:)

Yep, you got yourself a fossil! Here's the problem now... That's not a frsh piece. The worn, rounded edges show it have been moved some distance by rivers either modern or ancient. If you can identify the host rock type, and find an outcropping of that somewhere "up stream" (probably by miles) then you might find the a lot more.

It was found in an old farming field--that has become a construction site. It's a massive pile where they cleared, so I dug through some of it. Probably will be tough to figure it out, I've found old brick, earthware, reading pipe pieces and white ware. :) thanks for I.d.ing :)

Sounds great for a metal detector. Just a thought.

Katie, GET A METAL DETECTOR !!! GO NOW !!!!. I just got back from a 1749 store site that is in a field. Check out my finds in "Todays Finds" under 1749 store site revisited. It sounds like you site could have some really good stuff. If it was local, i would hunt it till i couldn't walk no more. steve
