Snoopy & Melvin - the mascots
We did have 2 mascots for our group while growing up. The first was Dennis, who was known to us as Snoopy. A really tiny little kid for his age, probably 1/2 the size of what we were. But he did have a cute little innocent face much like that of Snoopy, so therefore he became our Snoopy. Snoopy didn't participate in most of the things we did mainly because of his size, but he was still a kid from the block who was being raised by his mother alone. Snoopy was with us for about 2-3 years until he moved and never once came back to the neighborhood. Trust me, we never mistreated this kid either.
Maybe he was upset that we had literally adopted another mascot... Melvin To this day we have no idea where this kid came from, if memory serves me I think he was an orphan to begin with and ran away from home. So what do a group of kids like ourselves do?? We adopt him
It probably wasn't the right thing to do, but we were kids and just wanted to make sure he had a roof over his head, food to eat and clothes to wear. Between everyone in our group we were able to cover all the bases and our cellar clubhouse became his home. Melvin was with us for at least 10 years and one of the funniest moments was when we wanted to take him to a party where people were much older than he was. Our solution.. Age him.. We took stuffing from a chair dyed it, glued it to his face and gave him thick and unnatural looking sideburns
To this day we never knew Melvin's surname, but I hope he is doing well.
