Found a total of 4 40%ers and 1 90%er, 2 silver quarters ('64-D, '52), 2 war nickels ('43-P, '44-P), 1 buffalo (1920-D, the wife's first ever buffalo) and a lone wheatie (the elusive '58-D). One of the 40%ers was an ender so I was hoping for a bit more. My inability to find 90%ers also seems odd (career Kennedy 40% vs 90% ratio of 9.63). I went back to confirm and I can say with certainty that I've never found more that one '64 Ken in the same box. Now I've probably only hunted 100 boxes or so, but to have never found 2 in the same box seems brutal.

Both of the quarters were teller tray finds from different banks while dumping.

The 2 war nicks and the Buffalo came out of $60 in misc nickels I picked up today - very pleased with those results. I'm working to put together a Jefferson set from CRH'ing. It seems like a very doable goal, but I appear to have plateau'd out. So far I've hunted $4,100 dollars worth, have found 38 war nickels, 14 Buffalo's and 5 proofs. But I've had the same 9 openings in the book for the last $2,000 worth - '38D, '39D, '42S, '43D, '44S, '45D, '49S, '50D and '51S. I've found several '38S's, '55's but I'm stuck.

So the question is this - how many $ worth of nickels ON AVERAGE do you all think it takes to fill a Jefferson book? I'm guessing it's a $15k adventure but really have no idea.

Some nice finds. And your wife sure did good finding that better date '20D buffalo. Im not exactly sure how much in nickels I've searched over the past few years but the '38DS & '39DS nickels are very difficult to find for me. But I've been kinda lucky having found at least four or five '50D's. And since I haven't keep figures of my nickel hunting over the years, I can't answer your question but its probably a difficult question to answer anyway since it kinda comes down to just luck finding the key and semi key dates. I have a feeling I'll probably find another '50D before ever finding another one of the '38DS or '39DS nics again lol.

Good luck and HH!

1942-P ---- 4
1942-S ---- 2
1943-P ---- 26
1943-D ---- 0
1943-S ---- 10
1944-P ---- 16
1944-D ---- 5
1944-S ---- 1
1945-P ---- 12
1945-D ---- 5
1945-S ---- 3

All the war nickels I have found.

I have found all the others except for a couple of them (38 or 39 I think).

Since you're on the east coast the 49-S & 51-S will take time but they're not impossible. Here on the west side of the country I was able to complete a roll of each after several years of hunting. Don't know why, decades later, they haven't migrated east more. The silvers will also appear eventually. Keep your volume up and those holes will be filled.

According to my records, I've been through a little less than $27,000 in nickels from a variety of sources. I'm still missing the 50D, but have at least 5 books filled without that one. I'm in the midwest

I probably filled my set in roughly 200 nickel boxes.

I'm at about 100 boxes and need 4 the 39D 39S 38S and 43D. I bought the 50&50d for a dollar.

I just wish I had the enthusiasm to once again try to fill folders etc just like my dad and I did back in the 1960's. Even after all those years, I still have some holes that I would like to see get filled. We were checking & saving everything back then. Now that I'm in my late 60's, don't have the GO anymore, like you younger guys have. Til then, just keep stacking.

In the last year I've averaged $300 dollars a week in nickels searched. I still need the 50d but probably found enough multiples of other semi-key dates to swap for one. I'm working on my 6th roll of war nickels, second roll of buffalos and found my 4th liberty nickel yesterday - an 1883 with all details showing little wear. It's now one of my favorite finds.

A nice 1883 V nickel is a great find! When u say it has little wear does that mean it has full LIBERTY and is it a no-cents?

Very cool everyone! I appreciate all the information. $4K in and missing 9 seems to be right on track then. Another $16K or so and I should get there.

Thanks.

In the 200 nickel boxes I've done I found 2 1950d and several key dates. I guess it depends on the area you live in and how many nickel searchers there are.

Yes, full LIBERTY. IF no-cents means the word cents is not present, that is correct.

That's a great find, even better that its in such nice condition. Yes there were two types of the first year V nic's. The '83 w/cents is more valuable and that would have been amazing to find one of those with full LIBERTY, but the one u found is still an incredible find too. Since u just found it, u should have made a post of it. Id sure like to see of pic of that one. :)
