Try not to laugh too hard at me...

I bought 6 boxes of 1990 and 1991 NHL hockey cards, still in sealed individual packs.

I know, I know...and I knew it before I bought them. A person couldn't find a worse era for sports cards, but for $2 for the entire lot, I can't get hurt too bad. I could literally throw them in the recycle bin and think nothing of it.

What should I do with them?

*List on ebay as full box lots, maybe one box per lot, with a 99 cent start
*List on ebay with all 6 boxes in one lot, maybe as a BIN
*Take to the flea market in shrink wrapped boxes, and put an attractive price on them
*Take to the flea market and mark each individual pack, and hope that the thieves don't steal me blind (Unlikely, but possible.)
*Build a giant sculpture using these cards in my backyard and try to sell it as art
*Go to the park and give them to any kids riding a bike for use in their spokes
*Throw them in the recycle bin

Thoughts??

I think #6 or #7 will be your most fulfilling, and very near most profitable choices. I think the absolute best cards from that era are worth $2.50. I guess you could crack em open and see if you can make a 50 cent profit?

You didn't state the brand of the boxes, but there are a few hockey cards in that era that are worth some coin. Open them up, sell the good ones on ebay, take the rest to the park for kids to use in there spokes. Don't forget to get them clothes pins too. ;)

I'd buy a worthless bike and stick them all in the spokes.

Thank you for the replies!!! I do appreciate the help!!!

I have boxes of Pro Set hockey cards, and also, boxes of Score NFL cards from the same era.

How much is a pack of cards now? It has been years since I looked at them, but it seems that most packs were over $1.

If I piece these out by the pack, how much should I price each pack?

Donate them to a toy drive for X-Mas. Kids who don't have anything would love to open them up...even if they are worthless and have no idea who the players are. You can also get them to give you a reciept valued at the originial cost of the cards and take that off your taxes. When donating items to charity it is not what you can sell it for that counts...it is what it is technically worth.

Put them up for the next 30 to 40 years. Who knows sport card interest may come back by then.

When someone says something like that to me I usually just roll my eyes and end up throwing the item in the trash.:laughing7:

I would piece meal them out...That was the year i acutally started collecting Hockey Cards, and of course, like everything else...the 88 and 89 cards were worth more. But if they are Upperdeck or Flair, they would be worth selling the packs..wont make a killing, but you would profit for sure

Ill give you 4 bucks plus shipping....Then you just doubled your profits:occasion14:

do kids still ride bikes ? i like the spoke idea

thank you for all of the replies!!!!

Some of you are pretty witty with your replies. I do appreciate your input, and even though I knew these were 'bottom of the barrel' type finds, it is interesting and helpful to hear your thoughts. I feel that when we can have conversations about our trade, we all grow and are able to sharpen our skills a little better.

FWIW, the cards have been priced by the pack, and are headed to the flea market. I don't expect them to fly off the shelf, but it is surprising what will sell at a flea market.

In honor of the Brady Bunch just make a giant house of cards just take your bracelet off first and make sure Tiger is not around...Tiger was the name of their dog...right??

I do like the Toys for Tots suggestion but if not I would most likely do one box at a time on ebay. I think there is a way to do one listing with individual lots so the person can bid on one or all three.

Good luck

Toys for tots is a good idea, I personally don't think they carry near the value of Baseball cards.

Since they probably don't have much value, pile them up and have a bonfire and roast marshmallows

Just as an update:

We took the cards to the flea market. I sold enough to cover my costs on the cards on the first day. I'm not getting rich, but every little bit counts. I sold $3 worth yesterday alone, and $2 worth the day before.
