Found this silver item in the attic of an old house my dad owns. Is it a snuff box top, an inkwell top, or something else?

The top is engraved. The top piece is hallmarked with a lion and a small "d" on the inside cup. The bottom piece is hallmarked with S&A, an anchor, a lion, and a small "d" on the outside. Whatever it is it is at least 0.67 ounce of silver!

SOLVED! Silver Perfume Topper.

Re: snuff box, inkwell?

:read2:

It might be a Permume bottle or Vinigarete :P ...S&A might be Sanders and Aquilar who made them in 1898-1903.

Re: snuff box, inkwell?

I'd have to side on the ink well cap. Beautiful. :hello:

Re: snuff box, inkwell?

I would be comfortable calling this solved as a Perfume Bottle top OR an Inkwell top. Thanks all.

I'd agree with this. I thought it might be Swan & Adams (see below maker's mark picture), who were also Birmingham silversmiths around the same time (1898 and on); however, I haven't found that they made "scent bottles" like Sanders & Aquilar were known to.

They anchor means Birmingham, the lion means sterling silver and the "small d" would indicate the year (script=1878; plain=1903). It's hard to tell from your picture.

Listing for a pair of scent bottles, with hinged covers, Birmingham 1901 ... but no picture.

Re: snuff box, inkwell?

Yes, case closed. After reviewing some more pictures and looking at multiple hallmark reference guides, it is definitely the silver topper to a 1903(plain small d) perfume bottle made by Sanders & Aquilar. Thanks again for everyone's help.
