Don't get to look for stone artifacts much anymore but after some flooding this year I decided to walk a few washed out areas. No till has pretty much ruined most of the sites I use to walk but flooding will still uncover a few things. Other than the English gunflint and French gunflint in the group photo, the rest are Middle to Late Archaic. Not sure about the heat treated 5 inch knife though. Looks similar to a Munkers Creek knife, which is Archaic, but have never found one heat treated.

Good stuff! Really like the knife!

Very nice finds!!

That's a pretty good hunt. With your weather probably more will get washed out.

Nice finds and the knife does look like a Munkers Creek.
Have you ever used a metal detector where you are finding those gunflints?

The knife was found in two pieces about 10 feet apart. A lot of the time broken ones will have a piece missing but not this time. Glued together perfectly.

I have found over 2000 relics from the site with the gunflints. It is an 1850's Kaw Indian site. I have posted some of the items in the Fur Trade Forum over the years. My best find was made last year. It was an 1833 Dragoon Cap Plate.

That’s a fine bunch of artifacts!

Great hunt!!!

sheeeeeeew weee !!!!! what a killer day you had!!!! good on you, quito!

Id take that problem any day, i never, ever, find the other half haha I’ve got a bowl full of fragments waiting on the other half

You have real beauties, thanks for sharing. :icon_thumleft:

That would be an amazing find. I have found a fair number of Dragoon buttons but no plates.

I had found numerous Dragoon and Mounted Rifle buttons over the years on this site but was sure surprised when the cap plate came out of the ground.2018-04-05 14.35.39-1.webp

Was that found in a cultivated farm field?
Have a cleaned-up pic?

Yes, it was in a cultivated field. Couldn't believe it was still intact, other than the star burst shield that would have been behind it. Plus, I had been detecting that field for 17 years, don't know how I missed it.
I often wonder how it ended up their. The site is only a few miles off the Santa Fe trail, so I know the natives had contact with the Dragoons but still a mystery how a dress ornament ended up there.2018-04-16 12.39.19.webp

Nice finds , some killer points in there and the blades are awesome too. The long piece is interesting almost us an adze look to it, I’d call that a great day !
