Got out to the CW campsite around 7:45 this morning and didn't leave until 3:00. Hell, I was just enjoying the beautiful day most of the time before we get this snow they're calling for. Anyway, I hike to the usual spot and I'm not finding anything. Nails upon nails to begin with. Then I decide to start gridding this area out. It worked in my favor! I get a couple spencer bullets to start out, then I find my first eagle button! It's in rough shape, but it was a button! Almost a foot from that I found another eagle button! This one was all intact, which is RARE in this plowed soy bean field. Never found a whole button in this field until today, so I am proud of that find. So I get up and start detecting my gridded out area and I get a real iffy signal...went from dime/penny/nickel, all over the place really. I dig and I see another bullet casing(I'm thinking "great, another one of these"). BUT for some reason I told myself to be careful with it...nearly centimeters away from crushing it with my shovel...I pull out my first fully intact spencer carbine bullet. I did a little 'WAAHHOOO", and instantly took a pic of it and sent it to flyinryan2, who was also hunting with me.

That kinda topped my day, I didn't find much after that. Just a couple different callibur bullets and some camp lead and rivets. We all had a good day out there, my cousin(flyinryan2) got him a small cuff sized Infantry button and some bullets and another guy with us got a bunch of bullets, flat buttons(one that says "Rich Orange Colour" on the back? never seen that) and a beautiful red patina Buffalo nickel(1934 I believe). Thanks for looking!

Had fun once again. we all had some good finds. Sam seems to keep finding the coins there. :icon_thumright:

I know...I got 2 good coins from there last year, but none since then. I don't understand why there aren't more. :dontknow:

No thanks! I have enough quarters!

Thanks Alan. I was pleased!

I really like your finds. Finding a whole Spencer in getting hard to do theses days and an intact button will soon be harder to get. Between time, acid rain, and everything else, relics like yours are going to be harder to come by so congrats on getting some good finds. Tennessee digger

Thanks. I agree...with farmland being bulldozed and/or plows destroying the history. I was so happy to retreive these items intact like that. Pretty amazing they survived over 100 years of weather and farm equipment. :icon_thumleft:

Great finds , I've found cases before and bullets, never found a complete one though. Maybe some day HH

That was a joke about the trade, great job saving those CW relics !!!

lol I know. Wait...how many quarters? :D

Bravo old chap! Well done!

None of us can take anything too serious when our hobby consists of digging trash most of the time! Gotta have a sense of humor.

I LOVE digging those full spencers. It is hard to get them out of the ground in one piece. I've dug several of them, get them in my hand and they just fall apart. I think I've only been able to keep two of them in one piece.

Congrats on the finds....looks like it was a fun hunt!

Finding an intact Spencer cartridge is tough enough, and it is almost unheard of in a plowed field which is where I assume you are hunting.

Yep...plowed field. That's why I was surprised with the button and the bullet.

Nice finds those complete spencers are hard to find way to go!!!
