Once you get west of the indelible Omaha, Kansas City, Dallas, corridor, the Civil War relics, silver coinage, and other desired buried treasure falls far behind the eastern part of the US. As an example, since getting started in this hobby in 1962, the total face value of silver (and other desirable coinage) is less than $150. About the only place in the area you can find pre 1965 coinage in the old airbase. Unfortunately, most of the search areas are off limits for various reasons. You can find gold in New Mexico, but you best have an ATV. All said, one advantage we have in the desert SW is almost year-round hunting. To each his own!

I imagine meteorite hunting is better out that way due to less foilage.

That's true. I've not traveled out west of Los Cruses, into the desert. Hunting there isn't much more than a strong magnet and a good eye. There is a part (I don't remember the name of the area) that's about 500 square miles, with little or not plant growth. No water, and real roads, so you always hunt in at least pairs. It is good meteorite territory, but it is too hot for this old miner!
