Looks like a piece of one of those triangle tools that has angles marked as well as inches.
Just a piece of it it of course. Carpenters tool.

It looks crude enough to be a part of a machine that snapped off; maybe a portble sawmill, planer, something that required depth cuts

Does look like part of a framing square. I have several speed squares. Has to be an early one.

Only one prob with "square" theory... The measurements are backwards... not a ruler in my opinion... more like scale part

Good job Digging WV, pointing out the section it came off of. The Hip-Val (hip & valley) markings used to measure rise/run when making rafters. Those numbers will be reversed on the opposite side of the tool.
