Sonar Question

Does anyone have any experience using the Lowrance HDS-10 Gen2 or the Humminbird 1198 for locating wrecks in deep water? I'd be interested in hearing an comments about using either of these units.

Deep water? My experience with the Hummingbird is that it loses it's effectiveness after about 150fsw.

i just purchased the lowrance hds7 gen 2 and outrigged it in a pelican case to take from boat to boat. Humminbird cs was a joke so did the research. Not sure what your questions are

JOAT, thanks for your reply. Quite a few guys here have successfully used the Hummingbird for shallow water. I has great detail and ease of use. I'm curious what was wrong with it for you. I'm also curious at what depth does your Lowrance begin to lose detail?

Unfortunately I have yet to test in deep. Speed has been the biggest issue that effects my clarity. I almost bought the hb but I like the mapping ability with the lowrance. I'm still learning and about to check two lakes for WWII fighter planes. Also plan within the year to scan and store the Oklawaha river in Florida. I have heard others say 200 plus with the structure scan. It is almost 12" long transducer.

I moved the transducer on my depthfinder a quarter inch below the end of the transom and 2 inches to the outboard and it went from crappy to perfect even at 20 knots not sonar but it may be applicable?

yes I do know that much for sure, transducer placement is critical!! angle and placement where cavitatuon/turbulence can be kept to a minimum.
