Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I have a question.
I own an excel 2 that I use for the water and beach
and a sovereign GT that I can't take in the water.
I was strictly beach hunting until the waves were not calm.
So I got an at pro and got hooked on inland hunting.

I've read reviews that the Sov GT is excellent in parks and inland
however I find it very hard to use without a screen.

Hearing the tones is great but knowing how deep something is really does say a lot. I am not saying I don't dig shallow targets. I know people have found
some good stuff not too deep but at local parks sometimes it is nice just to dig deeper targets.

I got a 180 meter for the Sov GT last week. That helps with the target id but still does not help with the depth display

I love detecting in the water when I am at the beach and I'm not interested in changing coils or just staying on the dry sand. I'm happy with my 10 inch so my question is

Should I sell my Sov GT and get a back up excal? or an etrac? Or should I just keep my sov GT with the meter and continue to learn it?

any other suggestions would help.
thank you

If your question is are detectors with screens full of information better than a Sov Gt, the answer is no.

My complete inventory of metal detectors includes a rarely used Excal, two heavily used Sov Gts and two heavily used Tesoros. None of these machines has a meter or a screen. IMO, a screen and meters are unneeded. Why? Going back to my first lesson in metal detecting - dig everything! Which is what i do.

As you know, the Sov GT gives off different tones for different metals. It also gives off different sounds for different depths. I can tell when i've got something near the surface or when it's deep. Same goes when using the Tesoro's. A screen isn't going to tell me anything i don't already know from listening carefully.

I've got nothing against meters and screens and may someday buy a detector with those bells and whistles, until then what i hear thru my headphones gives me ll the information i need.

That said, metal detectors are like any other consumer product. That is, personal preference can make all the difference when it comes to enjoyment of the hobby. It you believe a detector with a screen that gives you more information is the way to go, by all means, the choices abound! Go for it and enjoy!!!

Great post and good read! I agree with you 100%! All too often MD'ers rely too much on their MD's screen and miss out on a lot of coins, rings and other valuables that are sitting right up against pull tabs, beer or soda cans, nails or even pieces of iron. While it can be tedious and time consuming, I believe that you should dig every signal! Heck, you can make decent money on the trash if you separate it by composition into piles or buckets, then take it to a Recycler once or twice a year. By doing this, you also get the added benefits of possibly finding valuable items that are being masked by the trash item's signal and cleaning up the location for you and other MD'ers. Each and every time that you go back to this same site, you will get less trash signals and be able to hone in on some of the deeper real treasure signals.

I am new to the great hobby so you all have more experience than I do and I value all your input. Thank you for taking the time to reply. Even sov GT users have posted it is not the best choice for trashy parks. Do you guys agree?

I think I'm going to sell it. Anyone interested?
