Ok quick question and don't poke fun at me. I can't tell the diff between a null and a break in the threshold when using my sovereign on the beach. There, I asked. Help? Mike

If I'm not mistaken, a null would be a buzzing, rejected iron target type sound, and a break in the threshold would be a silent moment in the humming threshold sound.

I don't really know what a break is myself. I know a null is when the machine goes over iron and goes quiet. Sometimes thats interrupted if theres other metal present...minelabs are great at that. hh gl -Joe

Sometimes a split second, sometimes a long null. I know it recovers with a diff threshold tone but still can't tell what a deep break in the threshold is

a Null to me is a Split second give or Take.
Even at slow speed swings like you should with the Sovereign.

Complete loss of sound for a few steps to many steps,
Is more likely Ground Conditions.

Nice thing about BBS It still will signal if there is a Good Target during them long Nulls.

Depth may decrease though so Work extra slow & all angles especially around chirps

If your PITCH HOLD changes then its a null and comes back with the tone of the target you just went over. You may get a break like Jeff said from bad soil...... most of the time from running to high sensitivity and the machine just cant recover fast enough.

If I know my Sov well enough... Your threshold will always be there if set properly. If it goes quiet, and back to tHe same pitch, that is a null for iron detected. If it was anything else, you would get a pitch change in the threshold.

Thats sounds good. I will give it a try and dig when the pitch hold changes. Thanks, Mike

Dig when you get a repeatable signal. If the threshold nulls and slightly changes, it's still in the iron range. A tone, even a broken one, and a threshold change, may be a good target. I would suggest sticking to strong, repeatable signals until you know what to listen for.

If you can find an used ML meter (~$100) or a Ron's 180 meter (~$70), you would be much better off. I have both, they are accurate and worth every penny.
