This was a very unexpected find as there was a turn of the century cavalry fort where I live but I found this over 10 miles away from it. The signal on my Equinox 800 was a 16-17 and if it hadn’t been 6-8 inches deep I would probably not have dug it. I am sure glad I did though! As I popped the plug and separated the dirt I saw the tell-tale green patina on the dirt that there was something old in the hole. As I cleaned it I recognized it as an Indian War period to Spanish-American War era cavalry insignia. After doing some research I found out the 11th US cavalry was raised in 1901 specifically to be deployed to the Philippines just after the Spanish-American War ended. The 11th cavalry was there until 1904 when they were then brought home and sent to Ft. Des Moines in Iowa to be refitted. The 11th was stationed at Ft. Des Moines until 1906 when they were then sent to Cuba to help contain an insurrection there. The 11th never returned to Iowa so the insignia likely dates to that 1904-06 period.
