Had an awesome hunt today with my brother. First good find was what I thought to be a warn down 2 reales but now I'm home and put it next to my other 2 reales (which isn't as warn down) it's bigger! I now believe that the one I found today is a 4 reales!? My 2 reales is slightly smaller than a quarter and this one, even though extremely warn down from the ocean, is slightly bigger than a quarter. Next good find was a seated dime with stars! Also got a nice little flat button with the shank still intact.

Here it is with my 2 reales (that I fried with electrolysis). And a quarter for size reference

Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

Great finds, and no doubt a serious challenge to find in FL. As far as denomination, you need to go by weight since diameters varied greatly over the years with coinage of the same denomination.

Thickness can be a giveaway. That said I seriously hope it's a 4R! Those are pretty rare indeed! Good luck with the ID and congrats

Thanks for the info scrappy! I can weigh it but I feel like that won't be too accurate considering how warn down this coin is, most of the edge is gone. I'm surprised how much detail in the shield is left

Ok so what I believe to be my 2 reales weighs 2.7 grams and the coin I found today only weighs 1.8 grams. Although it is very warn I doubt it's lost more that .9 grams so maybe it is a 2 reales

Those are some nice finds! IMHO, I believe it to be a 2 reale, by the size. Congratualtions! :occasion14:

Thanks professor! I think I agree. I didn't realize they came in different diameters. I'm still pumped!

Super cool...

Well done.

Wanna clean that cob up a bunch? Let it soak in lemon juice for about a week. Did great for my cobs and they had coral on them.

2 Reale or 4 Reale,, it is definitely Spanish Silver.
I have never found either.
Congrats to you

Congrats on the very nice finds... despite the fact that the coin is worn badly, I am still jealous.

Very well done sir.
