Split end sqaured nail

I dug up so many sqaured nails at the park that was a mid 1800s army fort. But none that looks like that this was it possible this sqaured nail was made for something else?

It appears to be an "Old time" cotter pin/key used to enuts from loosening on bolts. Just a guess.
