I found this spoon in about 3-4" on soil. Wooded area where there was an old house (no longer there). Sorry I do not have somethng to compare against. I'll get another pic together soon.

Dimensions: Overall: L: 2.5" edge to tang end, W: 1.25" across bowl
Tang: L: 1 3/8", W: 3/8"
Base: L: 1/2" from bowl to start of tang, W: 5/8" tapering to 1/4"

Metal: Not iron since a magnet wll not pick it up. Not certain what it could be; maybe bronze?

I was wondering how old you think this may be? Thank you for any insight or help you can pass on.

I have found spoons like this in an area that dates to the mid 1800's. Nice.

I think that is fiddle pattern. It is copper and was once silver plated. If its American probably 1800s

Thank you to the people who replied. A comparison picture is coming. The area the spoon was found was also in an area where troops from the French and Indian wars camped (about 1680's). Hoping at some point to find evidence of any occupation by the soldiers. I think I need a better focused head for my detector (xTerra 70) to get some better depth. Just have the stock one right now. Only hitting about 4 inches or so right now. Finding many square cut nails right now.

These spoons were posted here before and a TN Charter Member can search here for you. I think they were dated back into the 1850's.

My 1909 Sears catalog shows a spoon very similar. They were called Alaska Silverware and are advertised in the 1909 Sears Roebuck and Co. They are probably German Nickel Silver, which is not silver at all but will not rust and was used for silverware. Yours could either be a plated brass alloy or Nickel Silver, I cannot tell by the pic. File a piece to see if it looks silver color or brass color.

And if you feel this is solved, dont forget the green check. ;D
