Research......find where people used to gather. Old schools, parks, churches, fairgrounds, homes, camp sites, and so on. I personally like old home sites and private property more than the parks and other public property. Still some really good stuff found on public property but most of it has been hunted really hard and I like the relics as much as the coins. The most successful hunters spend tons of time doing their research. Old census maps, news articles, history books and online resources are some great tools. Topo maps will show you springs which are always good to check. The oldest home sites were commonly built near springs or other water sources. People used to camp overnight as they traveled and almost every old road had camp sites with water sources. I live in a rural area and always look for Buttercups blooming in the spring. They will come up in the same spot they were planted long after there is no obvious signs of a home having been there. Look for old road beds as they usually lead to old home sites. And the list goes on and on and on. Best of luck and read the stickies on how to post pictures of your finds. We all love to share our finds. :icon_thumleft:

Note: You will find that many people that treasure hunt will seem very short with you on this type of general question. They do all the research and are certainly not going to tell you where they hunt. I realize that many people just starting are asking the question in general but do get amazed at how often others will really get short with you as if you were asking them for their PIN # on their debit card so don't be thin skinned when you get some feedback from lions den.

The process of finding sites is limited only by your imagination and creativity.

just do your homework and if a spot looks good ask to swing your machine there

Thank you everyone for the information. I need to get out before winter is here!!!

Research. That's how I do it. Street tearouts. Look for old churches that have been torn down or old schools that have been torn down. City boelevards work great. Check out old maps on historicalmapworks.com they have an entire database of old maps you can overlay on a modern map. I do it daily and keep compiling and compiling until my Metal Detecting weekend Roadtrip the 27th.
