Found Iron Case or Box near Stagecoach Trail (Applegate Trail). 1850-1870?

Super cool find, as a case like this to just be abandoned without a station nearby, most likely denotes a potential robbery or attempted robbery. I am currently searching area for more clues! ⚒️💰

More Clues to the Location!! ... A Pan or Plate found 18" under dry creek, interesting it was just left there... Also 3 Frontier .38 Special shells found in a line parallel to the Original trail about 20 away. Watering/Feeding Trough. I searched the nearby hills and found a possible gravesite. Wooden marker is facing East, as was the custom then... More to come... thanks! Any ideas on these stones, if this looks like paint from an old well or station, or if it is dry clay?...
