I found this, today, in a local park, that goes back to territorial days. I don't know what it is, or how old. It's approximately 3/8" X 1/2". It rang up in the mid forties, so I'm thinking it might be gold plated. Any guesses? 20160830_203909.jpg

It could be a thin gold sheet cap over a base metal plate rather then gold plated. I've found cufflinks like that I've removed the tops off of and sold for scrap. Each gold cap would be like a half a gram. Other though are a gold filled cap that has a thicker layer of gold over the electroplate gold which the thickness is measured in microns and not much scrap value at all. Really like non at all. Maybe 1930s to early 40s I'm thinking is the age of your find?

It might have been a tie tack for a necktie, or possibly a broken cuff link.
