Stivers losing patience with reluctance to change change

U.S. Rep. Steve Stivers is tired of waiting for change. The Columbus congressman began pushing a plan more than a year ago that would alter the make-up of pennies and nickels to a new, more-affordable composition using American-made steel.

His proposal, dubbed the Cents and Sensibility Act, sat last year as a two-year study by the U.S. Mint on the topic was nearing completion.

The results of that study? ... More study needed. $$$$$

Where are all the other state representatives signing their support? The only other representatives that have pledged their support are also Ohio representatives. Looks more like political theater pandering to their constituents. The legislation has the support of the American Iron and Steel Institute (shocked!). But no support from the National Automatic Merchandising Association (vending machine industry). This is critical for any change to our coinage. The vending machine industry is a powerful lobby that influences the Mint. Just look at our dollar coinage. SBA sitting in vaults for years. Almost 20 years later, the vending machine industry decides that it needs more dollar coinage and it can't wait for a new design (Sacagawea in 2000). So the Mint dusted off the SBA dies and cranked out 40 million dollars for the vending machine industry.

The problem is that the Zinc industry is a heavy contributor to many congressional campaigns. Getting the change will be an uphill battle. BTW, Steel is made in Ohio, right?
