Hi;

Going to tumble this rather sick stopper in the near future and was curious if anyone knows what type of bottle/jar it went to. I also assume that at one time it may have had a cork liner around the insertion point of the stopper. The smaller end is just a hair under 1 3/4" across and the larger end is a hair over 2 1/4" . The embossing on top appears to read "Castleford & London" on one side and "AIRE & CALDER BOTTLE Co" opposite.

Pretty big stopper, could have been for a carboy or demi-john....

Funny, I have three Lea & Perrins and tops, one still has the cork liner on the top. Going to tumble out the sickness on the other tops and drill out some corks to put on the tops.

Do you know if Lea & Perrins ever made any tops without their embossing? I have a top without embossing that looks like a twin for those that do.

I have a plain smooth base food jar that the top fits which is why I was asking.

I know that the lea & Perrins container style was so popular in the 1860's - 1880's [and into the 1900's ] that other companies made the same style, copy cats. You can check out Edger Breffit & Co. also ---Tom

those stoppers were used by a lot of companies and reused by all the time by home-owners....

AIRE AND CALDER were out of London from 1836 to 1913. It's a food jar stopper. From what I see, it looks like it is complete. You might want to drop the museum a line for more info. I think this might look familiar....lol https://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/items/1545735
