Just a bit of info. Seems like I've heard of a number of thefts of PMs and coins lately. The 2 closest to home were from folks on other forums (MDing and PM) I read. In one instance, the guy had a safe, but it was not secured - so the thieves just took the whole safe :(

Please, please, please don't think it can't happen! If you want to keep your CRH finds at home, buy a safe and secure it! Bolt it to something sturdy (i.e. the floor) with big bolts. Make sure they go into something solid (lags) or use big washers (bolts w/ nuts). If there is space somebody could slip a prybar into, fill it with construction adhesive or similar.

You are never going to make something 100% secure (hell, somebody stole a 2000 lb. safe around here recently). But you can pretty easily make it more trouble than 99+% of thieves are willing to deal with.

Of course, there is always the safety deposit box, but some folks don't like not being able to get at their stash when they want. Especially the PM "tinfoil hat" types ;).

Oh well, HH all,
Wally

Good tips, Wally! I've often been amazed at how hard some people will work at making a dishonest
living.

Thanks for sharing this info WB.

Personally, all my goodies are kept in safety depsoit boxes for this reason. Obviously there is a cost associated with the SDB's but I have alot of peace of mind when I am not home.

if youre going to use a big bolted down safe remember- thieves may not be able to run off with it, but they will more than likely hold a gun to you or a family members head until you open it for them.

Yep that is why mine is in the bank.

Thanks

Read a story where a guy from around here bought a large gunsafe for his collection of firearms...had it installed at the back of his mobile home & thrubolted...had an alarm system installed for doors/windows.

Somebody came by one day when no one was home with a chainsaw...CUT OUT THE ENTIRE END of the trailer & all the bolts...took safe & all!

Go figure!

sounds like that somebody had insider information.

Good thing I sell mine before it becomes too much to deal with.
Safes are nice and all but if someone wants it...they are going to take it.
storing wealth is a good thing, but don't keep it some where obvious like a safe if its at home.

Like the old joke goes, if you have a $100 bill and want to hide it where Patric Earl wont find it...where do you put it... Well in a book of course! he would never look there.

Same goes for a lots of valuables. Caches in particular. How many caches have been found in walls, in hollow doors, taped to the back of a drawer etc.
Any thief is going to go strait for the safe in your bedroom...Duh, thats where everyone keeps it.
They are never going to look in a chest freezer under a bunch of food.
Who looks for valuables in an attic or crawl space?
A jar in your back yard buried under one of the windows is probably a safer long term storage than in a safe.
Who would suspect canned food in the pantry to be opened and filled with coins on the top shelf?
or a box of cereal for that matter.
Who is going to look in say an old tv set in storage, or an old computer sitting on a shelf.
How about in a box under a bunch of old magazines.
up in the chimney in a fireplace.
this is just what I came up with in the time I was writing this. use some imagination to hide things and you will also have luck finding things too if your looking for lost treasure.
When I was a kid I hid $50 cash behind the light switch plate in my bed room.
two screws is all it takes.
It kept my siblings from finding it...so well hidden it was not until i was like 16 when I remembered it and found it again.

But remember, if there is any danger of something being stolen...get a safe deposit box. Or if its not special liquidate it for cash that can be deposited or invested in something that works for you.

Hey you forgot to hid it in the mattress!

I hide four hundred dollars in a pair of high heels that were in their box. I forgot all about it then one day a friend came over and borrowed the shoes. She was nice and brought back the money. LOL I was embarrassed.

Then I hide two hundred up between a radio and the cabinet it was mounted to. I forgot about it when we moved I left first my huband found the money when he took the radio down.

The other day I keep feeling something in the lining of my coat I forgot I hide five hundred there. Gee now this all makes me sound crazy. LOL

Since I was a kid, I have always loved the secret compartment type of hideys. I had a fake plug plate that I used for my cash. I also had a 3x3 hidey in a closet that I built in the last home we owned. It had a hidden catch and hinges, and was totally invisible. I kept all my coins, and good jewelry there. My grandparents had a whole room that was hidden by a bookcase. The case swung open revealed a 12x10 or so room. My grandfather kept his firearms and other valuables in it. He didn't really believe in banks much. If I ever get to build my own home, I will have one too.
As far as SDB's go, I am a little leary of the government seizure of gold/silver. It's happened before...Call me paranoid...my wife does ;D

Wally - what is "PM" ? (Precious metal?) or some other term in this case?
