Part of a tree stump - possibly a burl or knot from a tree. Too difficult to tell from one angle with so much covered up.

Yep, burl . Some kind of damage to the tree and it repaired itself.

The consensus is burl but it could be a crazy old man that was frozen in time after seeing Medusa.

Although you've told us nothing about the size or material, by your screen name I presume this is in Alberta, in which case I'd go with it as an odd natural rock formation prevelant there as the result of extreme erosion conditions.

Or maybe it was Madusa herself, after someone shot an arrow from afar. :laughing7:

Looks to be a burl although I have seen some quartz outcroppings that have that burl look. And it does look like in the pic there are river rocks, water can do strange things to rock to change its appearance.

I was with everyone else on burl wood.....But the redish rust or iron looking spots makes it look like rock. Strange looking whatever it is! Kind of cool!

Well, petrified wood is just old wood that has had mineralization leech into the wood and harden. Whether it's a little bit of rust staining or full-fledged petrified wood, it's the same concept.

Your right, I didn't even think that far, to think of petrified wood. Either way? It would have to come home with me if I found it!:laughing7:

*lol* You don't even know how big it is. There might only be 10% showing. *wink*

While I am definitely leaning towards a burl, it has the appearance but not so much the color of some lava flows.

Was there any attempt to sink a knife into it ? , rock is hard, wood not so much.

I bet it's fairly close to water.
