Greetings fellow diggers!

Came across a shoe buckle today. Looked pretty normal coming out of the ground. However, when I got it home, I realized that there appears to be a fairly detailed veneer covering a portion of the top. Some of this veneer has turned to dust..the rest is in the process of pulling away from the buckle itself. I have found about a half dozen shoe buckles over the years and have never seen this before. Has anyone else? Any opinions are welcome. HH.

Nice recovery on the buckle, not sure on whats going on with it since you cleaned it up.

Awesome Buckle find. Congrats!!

is it a iron buckle? and was plated with copper/brass?

Beautiful buckle recovery! :occasion14:

Beautiful buckle! Do you think it had a shell or thin wood inlay? Sub 8-)

Congratulations on your nice buckle find.

Nice find! It looks like Brass with an intricate overlay design made of Pewter or similar metal that was lead soldered on.

Nice old relic you found. No idea how it's constructed but, it's cool.:headbang:

If its a silver plating, then yes.

Thanks all for the comments. The base material appears to be brass, and gave off a solid "85" VDI in the ground. A piece of the overlay only rang up in the mid "30"'s. Lots of detail now that I' ve had a chance to clean it up some. I seem to have good luck finding shoe buckles, and they continue to be one of my favorite things to pull out of the ground. Thanks for taking a look.
