OK...This might be a reach, but I think I found a Liard de France coin. I came across this coin on a hunt earlier today. The coin itself is in pretty rough shape, but at the base of what I believe is the reverse, you can see a Fleur de lys. After some research, this detail seems to fit best with a 1 Liard coin. These French coins were minted from 1655-1658 ( Juvenile bust), 1669-1707 (Old bust), and 1713-1715 ( Bare bust). They weighed 4 grams and had a diameter of 23 mm. My coin weighed in at 3.7 grams and had a rough diameter of 23 mm.

Here a picture of the coin next to Mercury dime ( 1944) found on the same hunt. I also included some info about the Liard from Numista

Lastly is a picture of a shoe buckle frame ( also found on the same trip today)...framing the other two items.

Let me know what you think of my ID for this coin. I'm open for other suggestions!

Thanks for looking.

Congrats on the nice OLD coin!!! I'm no coin expert but I think you are 100% correct on your I'd. I'm only saying this from the details I see left on your coin matches the pictured numista coin. Thanks for sharing. Awesome going.

As someone who has found similar coins, I would say it's most definitely an old French one similar to what you cited. I'm not an expert but I do know that they made a few different designs so I can't confirm that the one you cited is the exact ID but no doubt it's a 1600s/1700s liard.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts about the ID on this coin! It's been quite fun reading up on French coins from this era. Half the fun of detecting is taking the time to research your finds when you get home.

I'm hoping to get back to this spot on Saturday and see what else might be unearthed. Will keep you posted.

Cheers!
