It's rare to get them complete but when you do they have a thin copper sheet on both sides of the tangs.

Not sure your ever see a photo of it attached to leather!
The 2 pieces of buckle plate that were mercury soldered onto the tangs had rivet holes at the end to attach them to the leather.
