Garrett AT Pro (Thanks Big Boy Hobbies) Makro Pinpointer
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
Ugh ! alright guys and gals. my best friend's parents own a circa 1760 home. ....ya - 1760! During the summer I did a few hour hunt with my old bounty hunter quicksilver (my first metal detector, a really cheap machine)...came up with all junk as I expected because my machine was so cheap and falsey and no depth and blah blah blah [emoji56] .

I realized quickly in this hobby - you get what you pay for. If your getting into this hobby I recommend getting a middle of the road or better machine because it will change your whole experience of metal detecting.

I ordered up the AT pro with 5x8 coil in October (the "spring package") because im so in love with this hobby, and after my research the machine too [emoji8] [emoji13]

I've been anticipating this hunt all week. Come on, you guys all know the side effects of a planned hunt....losing sleep all week and especially the night before ect...

Get to the house for a solid 4 hour hunt - and came up with all JUNK (except the modern US pin, I found that kind of awesome) I know a better machine doesn't mean your going to dig old relics, coins or jewelry every plug - but i'll be honest, I was hoping for maybe ONE old coin or relic

Anyway. I apologize for the long post as I had to just vent, lol. I know this is 99% of metal detecting and I'm sure my day will come, as some say - this is just the reality!

Thanks for stopping in and HH!

I'm not saying this is the right way over someone else's way of doing it, you or anybody. This in my opinion of what works for me. Pro coin, iron discrimination on 35, sensitivity (especially in trashy, iron infested) last two windows open. This will give you some very scratchy sounding signals, but what I'll do is when I get a signal like that I hit the mode button once and check that target in "all metal, iron discrimination 0, sensitivity, last two windows open. It will clean up that signal.
The reasons I do it like this is because "all metal" tends to make me dig allot of tiny signals. I want coin size objects. At the end of hunting that site I might want to dig tiny signals, but that's all according to what kind of site it is. The sensitivity, I like the "fog" analogy. If your driving in the fog and put on your high beams the light bounces back in your eyes. Same with your sensitivity, too high and your losing depth, unless your in a cleaner soil condition, mineralization and iron infestation.

This isn't a trade or profession where there's a life or safety on the line, but it does have the same common denominator as the other two-and that we all have to invest the time in learning how everything works. Don't beat yourself up on digging trash or the lack of old coinage ,everyone has been there done that and it's just part of the game. When you get frustrated do what you did go to a quiet area and start working your way back into the noisy mess.

There is one thing that sets hunters apart is the ones that just dig, and dig, head down and loving it no matter what comes up because if you dig enough holes something will set your butt down and you'll be staring at it going wow! If you have the passion you'll get the coil over it!

Patience grasshopper...

You guys are full of knowledge and opinions its great, I have a passion for this hobby and even though yesterday I got skunked I surely enjoyed myself, every plug was an adventure

After reading your comments I will try a few different methods and see how it works for me, I always thought you could miss targets with iron audio off

You'll do well at this hobby. You enjoyed yourself and it sounds like you're passionate about it. If you really focus and learn every time out you will keep improving. If you get a weird signal....dig it. That's how you learn. I still learn something basically every trip out. We all learn in a hurry that there's a hell of a lot more crap than good stuff lol
