Plan A (probable Iron Age Crop-mark) was out of the window as the oil-seed rape had not yet been mashed in. Therefore, we tried the nearby 4th NEW Roman Site, knowing it had little to nothing on it. This time I gridded the opposite way & had nothing more than a 1799 halfpenny & 2 buttons. (45 mins hunt)

We then moved to another field that wasn't yet mashed in & after 5 minutes of not being able to dig in the tractor tracks, I moved us to the neighbouring field. This one was Wheat stubble & I hoped it would be easier to dig. It wasn't & digging past 4 inches was killing me in this sun, so we gave in after 1 hour 15 minutes with the following;
17th C Token (A first, I think...)
Squirrel from the top of an early 20th C brass toasting fork
Piece of a 16th C Sword Belt fitment
1 piece Dragoon Guards Button
1694 W&M Farthing
bits..

I had no-ideas of where to try next, so I looked at Cru'dads list & thought about returning for a 2nd look at a Barley Stubble field we had found a Medieval Site on. (the eagle horse harness pendant field) Its a big field & I thought it had more potential for a Roman Site, but if not we could get a little bit of Medieval instead.
I have no idea why but this field was the easiest to dig out of any we have tried recently, and its mostly clay & on a hill! But it was a relief to be able to dig again without jumping 3 ft in the air on to spade.
As we worked our way up the hill Cru'dad got a Roman As, great we thought, gridded that area, nothing. So maybe it was associated with the nearby lump or possible track-way. We loosely gridded over this linear lump following it up the hill, when I banged into my first Roman Silver. Now we are thinking, it must be a Site, gridding again - nothing. OK it had been 1.5 hours in the crazy burning sun, so time to head back & work out what's going on another time. I headed over where I thought the better area was OTWBTTC, & banged into my 2nd Roman Silver.:headbang: (gridded again, nothing)

What is great about these 2 Roman Silver are;
AD225 Denarius of Sev. Alexander is the best of his I have ever had. (I have lots but they are all debased or silver plated, broken etc..)
AD162 Denarius of Lucius Verus - Until last year we had never had this Emperor & the only 1 we have is a bronze As, & this is our first silver of him.:icon_thumright:

Wow Cru, you and your Dad keep finding some totally awesome stuff. that silver is unbelievable. The Romans had really stretched out to be there and it seems that they left all kinds of proof that they were there. love to see your threads

Cru, I love your posts and finds man. Those ancient silver coins are incredible. Thank you for continually amazing us!!

Glad you ended up on a field that was easier to dig and provided some great finds. Congrats on the double Roman silver, and I quite like the squirrel!

At the beginning I thought the squirrel would be my best find, so I was very happy with it.

Two silvers and a squirrel is great! Well worth standing the heat!

THANKS ALL.

Very pleased with this, as normally we would be doing 7 hour days this time of year, so to get this result in half the time on untested ground is a blessing.
