could it be a smushed fired copper jacket modern bullet? perhaps a hollow point (based on the little dot of copper on the flat side).

It does look like a copper jacketed bullet.
The "cup" base on the rear is fractured. Usually that stays intact.

Comparing the size to the penny it appears to be a .40 auto copper jacketed bullet.
