You couldn't have asked for nicer weather...the hunting wasn't much. Found a few bits of pottery, a tip and a few preform or give-up pieces. 20130421_223444.webp
This was a scraper? I found last week when I had an hour to kill. My thumb fits nicely on the top pad.20130421_223705.webp

Are you sure that piece is a scraper? It looks really close to a gun flint. Nice find, and obviously not natural!

I am thinking thumb scraper of blue hornstone. Good spot Joe. Those are highly collectable and not easy to spot. Nice seeing finds from around here.

Gotta love nice weather and artifacts.
You're definitely in the right area.
The pottery is a good sign that alot of time was spent there.
Some definite work on those pieces
Looks like your on the trail of some real nice finds.. good luck out there ...I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
NC. might be right about that one being a gunflint..can you post a photo of it facing the other way? Mabey with a size reference.. or just in your hand. Here is a couple of mine for comparison.

I'm leaning towards scraper though.

They look close to me!

There that thing is..LOL.
Its funny how every little detail of our finds are remembered ..I got stung by a bee right after I picked that up.

@ tnjoe You guys up in Tn have some nice looking flint. When you find a piece of flint that looks broken check all sides of it to be sure it isnt a whole tool. Not always but some times these tools look broken but are whole. Look for secondary flaking along the edges. If it has secondary flaking on all sides it is a whole tool. I have found some that dont have any work on the face but yet tiny flakes removed from the edges only. Looking forward to more of your finds, rock

I have the pieces you sent in a frame along with some of my finds. I have a note behind them with who, where, when, you know, the important stuff. I'm going to have to add, the bee sting to the note. Lol! As soon as I get a few extra bucks, they'll get a frame of their own. They are protected at least!

I knew they would be appreciated NC. that's why I sent them. Your a good man. "Stay cheesy"

Scraper tool and a nice one. It has the notch on it. I find allot with that notch and even on the knifes. I dont know what it was for but if you find one with the notch then its a tool/ scraper.

Alot of those were Hafted in bone or wood handles. The notched area would serve to seat the tool firmly in place. The small end inserted into the handle.
Here is another Tennessee blue hornstone example.

@ GB what about the round turtle style scrapers with the notch? I got quite a few like it but are small with the notch. I am asking cause I dont know the purpose for the notch case they are so small I wouldnt think they would of been hafted. The black ones are the size of a dime to quarter.

With some of those being small makes it even more likely it would have been in some sort of handle.... the way I look at it....
Would you want to try to work with that little thing while your hands were covered with blood trying to keep that slippery little thing between your greasy fingers?
Its hard to see those little ones you posted but I think the "notch" your referring to is where material was removed to create a graver spur.
