I hope you all got out to dig something good today. I was able to get out and hunt with Joe Coin, enjoyed the weather and made some nice finds.

I hit a nice area of coins today, I pulled a slick, and I do mean slick no-date Shield nickel, when I dug it I said to myself what the heck? It just looked like a slick plug, until I turned it over and saw part of the shield, then I smiled as it is my first dug Shield in all of my years of hunting ;D. The rest of the coins included a 1908-D Barber dime, a 1911 Barber dime, an 1891 Indian Head penny, a mix of wheaties and clad, a lead sheep, and an antique broach or pin.

All in all I had a great day!

I also included a nice 1907 Indian Head and 1910 Wheatie dug from the same hole on a short previous hunt.

Steve

That's some beautiful diggin' there Steve....and No,it's not slick enough  Great Job on the Barber's and the IH as well, look's like a good day,Congart's To Ya!!!

Glad you had a nice hunt! It looks like the dirt does a better job with the wheat pennies. It looks like yours do not come out so dirty as mine does when i pull them out of the ground.

Those coppers sure came out nice  (and the silver too). . . all the old Lincolns I find here in northern IL look like crap >:(

Take care,

great finds...just wondering, as i am not very knowledgable about older coins..could that be a 2 cent piece?? is there any way to tell with the lack of details?

Thank you, and yes there are a couple of ways to tell. One would be the weight, the other would be to measure the diameter. If you don't already have one I would highly recommend purchasing a coin book called The Official Red Book of United States Coins by R.S. Yeoman. That book contains a huge amount of reference information on coins from the 1600's to present.

Good hunting,
Steve
