We are going to Australia at Surfers Paradise this summer and
I would like to do some detecting there. Some forums state that you need a permit and others say you do not. Has anyone detected in Australia that can answer this query?

You need a miner permit ($30 a year). Permit just mean you agree detect on the Queen’s land. Any historic finds and heritage belongs to the queens. If its private property, you need owner permission. Depend on the states to states. As for beaches, give the city council there a call where you holiday. Best luck.
