I KNOW SWIFT LIVED AND CREW LIVED IN AN EAST FACEING ROCK HOUSE THATS ABOUT ALL I KNOW IF ANYONE HAS MORE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR IT MY INFO ON THIS SUBJECT IS LIMITED AT THIS TIME ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED THANKS

East facing makes sense as far as practicality goes, East facing would be more comfortable for them to live in. The prevailing winds generally coming from the SW and W would protect them from rain/snow/wind and the direct sun in the afternoon in the warmer months. Can't say I could help you with anything of detail though.

THANKS HIKER GUESS I WILL HAVE TO START DIGGEN INTO OTHER INFO THINK THERE IS SOME ON HERE JUST HAVE TO FIND IT

Just about anything relating to where they slept would be journal related info, anything else is just conjecture from searchers/researchers. Unless someone has come across some JoS or JS carvings and dates inside rock houses that are posted here. But I guess even that does not prove the rock house the carving was found in is where they actually slept... hmm. I would imagine during bad weather they would rest in rock houses while traveling to and from as well.

Good Luck.

There is also a literal Rock House, Squared up rocks used to build a house. Found the remains of one in Elliott county on the little sandy, near the line of rocks. The door lintel is still there as are a number of hand chopped rocks.

THANKS CURTIS REASON I PUT THIS UP I FOUND A ROCK HOUSE FACEING THE EAST IT IS VERY LARGE AND WITHIN 1 MILE OF THE MINES I FOUND I DO NOT KNOW IF IT IS RELATED TO MINES WILL FIND OUT THIS WINTER HOPE IT IS RELATED IF SO MAY FIND SOME VERY INTERESTING THINGS DO NOT KNOW WHAT MIGHT BE REVEALED ITS ON PRIVATE LAND DO HAVE PERMISSION TO DIG

Hey Ole buddy! I hope your well!!!! I think I know where that location is. If your going down the Little Sandy from the line of rocks its on the right, right? Or am I totally wrong.

that is not the one good guess though will give more after i dig

I would think the choice of an East facing rock house would serve the purpose of using the sun rise as an alarm clock. As for the size of a rock house to dwell in, I would think as long as it was just over head high would have been a good size as some of the men stayed over the winter some years according to some of the legend.

Don't know if this ties to the mines but its within half a mile of the mines I found

Looking at the stacked rock I would say someone used this as shelter in the past? Did you find anything of interest by screening the floor?

there was a wall one each end this defenately was a shelter at one time i have not screened floor yet hadf other things going on at that time will do dig in near future i h.have permission to dig this will take awhile it is very huge area under here.

A good tell tale sign that it was used as a shelter over time would be smoke stains along the ceiling and out the upper sides. If no stains, this could have been an early livestock shelter for pioneers or a seasonal shelter for long hunters... something to consider.

Only need to sift the top 6 inches or so to get back 300 years with cover like it has. Good luck!

Looks like a good place to spend nights in the winter to me. looks big enough for a good size crew of men as well.
