If this helps with a yes or no on if it's a scabbard tip, its punched "Patent" across the top of the tip, something unreadable through the middle, and more unreadable across the bottom.

Possibly a bayonet scabbard tip. They are a fairly common find in CW areas. Can you be more specific about where it was found? No GPS coords needed, just state and county.

I'm guessing the penny was exposed to years of fertilizer in a field some where. Whatever the case, the soil was NOT good to it.

NW Vermont so, not well known for its 1 Civil War skirmish about 10 miles away. But this was farmland as far back as 1903 with Revolutionary War era farms around it. Doesn't mean it couldn't have been brought back home from service. Found this near a 1700's(?) copper flat button and some 1860 & 1870 coins. Was hoping location of its patent marking would clarify if it was a scabbard or not. Your input is really appreciated.

I can't see the mark in your pics.

I don't know for sure but someone will confirm that 'Patent' puts it in the post CW era.

It reads "Patent applied for" on the tip.

Possibly an early 20th C Springfield rifle scabbard.

Maybe a WWI or WWII muster point? :dontknow:

The item to the left may be the end of a military style belt. Used well into the 20th C.

Thanks for the help. CW, WWI, or WWII, it's my first and I'm pleased.
