Taking Quartz Samples

Living in SE Alaska. There are a few areas with exposed quartz veins and stringers. Would like to mess around taking samples, crushing, and panning them out. On another site they suggested welding a three inch pipe to a butt plate and making a ram filled with sand to crush the ore. Any suggestions? What are some other tools that I would need to gather samples and crush? Other types of hardware? Loupes? Looking at this as a small time hobby to help pass the darkness. Not wanting to spend much money.

Try this

8) I ran across this method, somewhere in my travels!
Get a 1' (or so)long piece of pipe, with threads on one end!
Get a smaller piece of pipe, that will fit into the first pipe!
But long enough to stick out of the first pipe.
1' 1/2 or so, for a grip!
Thread caps onto both pieces !
Put samples into the larger and :P "Smash" away!
Cheap and replacable!
The caps come in slightly rounded or flat!
Get the flat, if you can find them!

Now to MY question!
I have to blast a 15 foot deep shaft!
Into 15' of solid rock, monozite !
About as hard as granite!
Into a cavern!
I have "Playing" experience with blasting!
ops: You know, moving a large boulder, spliitting one in half, etc.
But! This is serious stuff!
Anyone out there who can help with the project?
Do you have knowledge, equipment, etc.?
You will share in a good sized treasure cache!
The site is in Central New Mexico!
On a legal mining claim.
