Relic Hunting
Back in the spring I was lucky enough to land a new job as facilities manager at a local kids camp in Charlottesville Va. It has been a very fun and rewarding place to work. Each week the camp has a theme and it just so happened that it was Ancient Adventures a few weeks ago. So that got me thinking, I decided to put on a small program for preteen - early teen kids and offer an exciting lesson in real, local history and set up a portion of my relics on display. Many of which I encouraged them to pick up and handle and ask questions to really experience the history in their hands just as we do every time we recover a relic or old coin. I took about 15 minutes to cover key important dates and facts of Va history and the rest of the time I allowed them to look at the collection and ask questions. They were absolutely thrilled and excited to handle and closely observe artifacts that they had only ever seen in a museum or many never at all. I also showed them a brief operation of my 2 best machines and they asked questions about that as well. It was truly an exciting experience for me and for the kids.

Then last week the directors asked me to put on a similar program for 7 separate groups of kids ranging from 7-14 totaling about 200 kids! I was floored and immediately got to work! I was telling a true friend Mike Post of Woodland Detectors about the opportunity and he immediately offered to drive 3 hours and furnish about 20 kid friendly detectors that had been donated by various manufacturers for a similar program he ran at 4H. Along with that he offered to help direct and manage the program for me! My first thought was that this was going to be a lot of work, and boy was i right! But let me tell you it was worth it! Mike showed up with a truck full of detectors and a tub full of donated tokens, jewelry & Key Chains! We seeded a large wood chipped lot for the kids to hunt in. I stared each 40 minute group basically the same way as the first program with a brief history talk but with a bigger focus on proper recovery and ethics for detecting. The kids loved the artifact display again and we were bombarded with questions from all sides! Asking about bullets, buckles, coins you name it they wanted to know about it! After 15 minutes of that we escorted them to the outside hunt area and gave them a 5 minute lesson on the machines and recovery. After that we handed them a machine and they were off finding buried treasures! Including a Walking Liberty Half Dollar prize coin that was redeemed by the lucky finder for a manufactures T shirt! These kids were barely big enough to hold the detectors but hold them they did and in any way they could! They were recovering the targets as fast as we could reseed them! They were truly having a great time. So much so that with some of the kids we literally had to pry the detectors from there hands! Sounds like me in a good spot LOL!

Special thanks goes out to Mike Post, the Manufactures that Donated Machines and Targets for the kids, the Camp Directors, my wife for putting up with me and Mike for 2 days of hunting and stuff and most of all thanks to the kids for being as great as they could have been!

Happy Detecting to All

Good job James and Mike. We need to enstill an appreciation of American history into all the kids we can because the schools won't do it unless they happen to have a teacher who is personally interested in history. I think that you and Mike deserve an Honorable mention award by the Tnet moderators as this project involved a lot of work and the appreciation of our hobby and letting them detect the historical artifacts is an experience these kids will always remember. WTG, Quindy.
By the way, some of those "kid detectors" looked like the one Modern Miner uses-LOL.

Just got back in town and saw your post James. You two guys are OUTSTANDING!!! Fantastic thing you did for the kids.
I totally agree with Quindy for once, ***HONORABLE MENTION***.

As far as my detector looking like the "kid detectors", he's also right, but ask him which one of us found the "NC" buckle. :laughing7: :laughing9: Nuff said.

Great post & thanks for sharing.

As far as I can tell no relics are missing and all my coins are still there. I gave them that warning before hand :icon_pirat:
They did however keep what they found in the hunt!

A very good deed, that I wish I could've contributed too and been there for....and I would've if I hadn't already planned the trip to see my family in South Carolina on the same day but at least Mike was able to attend it! It looks like it turned out very good and I'm glad all went well :hello2:

Next time Brotha! Nest time!

You should be proud! You did a good thing with those kids!

That is great. Sounds like both of you and the kids enjoyed themselves.

I did a much smaller version of this for my daughters Preschool class four years ago (wow..how time flies) I thought they were too small to swing detectors so I took one of those under the bed shoe bins and filled it with sand then seeded it and allowed the kids to use a Whites Bullseye pinpointer to find the coins. I originally had 15 minutes but the kids kept having questions. I would look at the teachers and they would give me the nod to keep going. I think it lasted an hour and the teachers were impressed that I was able to keep 20 or so 4-5 year olds engaged and seated for that long.

My daughter is now eight and loves reading about history. She is constantly requesting to go see different exhibits at the museums. I still have to take her to the Pompei exhibit in NYC before Sept. 5th. She has read two books about it since learning about the exhibit. This stuff really sticks with them. I'm sure most of your kids will ask for a detector for their birthday or Christmas this year. Congrats for a job well done.

BTW nice collection.

Seriously excellent work!

my wife uses many of MY finds * -(which quickly become part of HER "teaching" collection at school )-she teaches 3 thru 5th grade music --but often mixed in with the music is a history lesson * music often reflects what is going on time frame wize * -- so when she speaks about -"pre columbus florida" indain music * my native american arrowheads "pop" up -- when its the first peroid of spanish colonial era -- old spanish colonial buttons show up -- when its british / american rev war era -- a 1770 and 1775 era british halfpenny show up -- several items from the civil war also show up as well as several railroad related items .

kids are always normally told by adults"DO NOT TOUCH" basically just about everything -so actiually getting to see up close , and touch and "feel" history really gets em going. ---many ask me or my wife about coins and relics and the kids call me "the history dude"

Nice story James. You did a great job with those kids. The amount of work you did to prep for this event was nothing short of amazing! Thank you for the opportunity to participate.

Those kids will never forget that day. :hello2:

Mike
