Went out to the state fair grounds that I frequently hunt this morning. I decided to go over an area where the campers for the fair workers park. In a 2 foot by 2 foot area I dug 106 pennies. Unfortunatly none were wheats. 24 of them were pre 1982, the oldest being a 1961 D. I assume they were in rolls when "lost" as it was such a small area to contain so many cents. Some were nearly stuck together. I would pass a clump of dirt under my coil and there would be 3 to 6 in each one. Some would literally fall out of my hand. Needless to say I will be double checking that area soon. Maybe I will find some quarter rolls.

i hope they are in better shape than the pennies ive been digging up...cool find

The zinc ones tho newer or in worst shape. Goes to show that they are making money cheaper and cheaper.

Not a bad day. I would definitely go over that area again and again. I bet your arm was tired, I know that mine would be.

Actually they were all in a small area. I would just dig up about 3 inches deep of soil and leaves, mulch. On my knees, pass the dirt by a hand full under my coil while the detector was lying there. They were all literally in a 2 foot by 2 foot area! When I was done I passed the detector over about a 4 foot by 4 foot area until I didnt get signals anymore. So that particular area was emptied. I will be going back and do the entire camping area when i can. This whole place has got to be unhunted as I have been there quite a few times and always find a pouch full of clad. I originally went over a huge prtion of the place with my Bounty Hunter. I have only recently returned with my Tesoro to go over it again and cover parts I have not hunted yet. I have asked quite a few of the local detectorist to go as well but no one has come through. The entire place is about 30 acres or more if i remember correctly. Will have to check that info. again on a site where I found the information. Cheers, Shane

My bad.........the entire area is 133.36 acres !!! And i thought 30 acres!!! lol Lot of area for an 8 inch coil :o

Gracious...that is indeed, a big area! And a LOT of coins in such a small area too! Congrats on finding them! Now move that place closer to me so I can help you find more! lol

Shane, I know your pain..after digging up so many, you always hope for some oldies in the mix.

Alot of times children like to play with pennies in the dirt..I dug almost 500 pennies out of one spot in a yard where a friend of mine used to live when his daughters were little. They were all in an area about 3 foot square. His daughters were playing there one day and buried the hoard of Lincolns. I gave them back to their father in a mason jar.

Another time I found about 50 of them on the side of a house in my neighborhood. One coin was from Israel, the rest were pennies. There was evidence of children there judging from other things I dug up in the yard. I also found over 2 dozen wheats in a 3x4 foot area of another yard that was also riddled with toy cars and other lost kids' stuff.

Hopefully sometime you'll come across a spill of something more unusual, but a neat find nonetheless!

HH,
Nat

Cool maybe you will find a roll of "Double Eagles"................

That would be a dream come true

Shane, I found a penny spill at the fair ground I hunt. Had close to 30 in it. I didn't think I would ever get all those pennies out of the ground. Like yours mine was in a small area and not very deep. How old is the fair ground you hunt? Keep hunting no telling what you will find. Mr. Pepper hunted ours today and I found a brand new pocket knife (eyeball find). That is the second pocket knife I have found there.
We had a good hunt but I am to tired to share pictures tonight.

Well if I was still there, I'd come hunt with ya. Sounds like that site will keep you busy for a while! Congrats on those finds and good luck on your return.

Pepper I have done some research on the place. They have held the fair there sence about 1972 or 1973 or so. Explains why on the normal part I hunt where the rides are stationed I find mostly 60s and 70s to present coins. Have found a brass belt buckle and 50 cal spent round there as well . Glad you did well on your hunt......post some pix soon! I love to see!

Pepper
