Not sure if this belongs on this forum but here it goes. I went to TD bank today to pick up some pennies for my bosses. I know two of the tellers there, so while I was B.S-ing with one of them I notice a guy dumping a large bucket of change into the coin counting machine. He recieves his slip from the machine and gets his money and leaves. I commented to the teller that he never checked the reject tray, she told me to go check it out. Glad I did, ended up walking away with $25.61. Checked for silver coins since I know the machines often reject them, but none were present. Today is also my Birthday, so this was a nice birthday surprise. Now if I could just get the bank to sell me their half dollar bags I'd really have it good. One of the tellers commented to me once that a woman turned in $20 dollars in Peace dollars. But the teller was smart enough to buy them herself, all 22s though so no key dates.

very nice!

at work i saw my manager pick up coins... i looked and he left a quarter, so i took it and was like what u get... he got 4 pennies and gave. so 29 cents

3 TD tricks i learned.

1. Always fill her up. On the some models the tube to the tray catches coins , especialy if they block it with the bag.

2. When they lift the catch basin to work the machine there is a magnet that catches magnetic coins.

3. On some models coins catch in the corner up top and can be scooped out with a ruler.

Of course some discretion may be needed on 2 and 3.

Not sure how to respond to this. But here goes..... You observed someone basically lose some money like they dropped a $20 out of their pocket, and waited till they left and picked it up.... Hmm. And you feel that this was a birthday gift? (Bad Karma)

Now if you did not spy or observe this person or walked in after they were gone I would say nice find but you had an oppertunity to say to him. Hey did you check the reject bin cause it sounded like the machine was kicking some back. (Good Karma)

Ethics my friend play a significant role in this hobby and Karma will get ya. There is good and Bad Karma. Which do you want to have?

Happy Birthday.

I didnt observe anyone lose money. I commented that he never checked the reject tray. I was shocked when I went over and found as much as I did. The machine also tells you before you leave to check the reject tray, if a person chooses not too, thats not my fault. I also neglected to mention that as I was receiving the money an elderly couple came in, dumped their coins, and then didn't check the reject chute. This time I did notice that coins were being shot out, since some actually were rejected onto the floor. I said to them as they were walking over that they should check the chute, they thanked me and found about another 3 to 4 dollars. But thank you for making me out to be a thief.

Normally I agree with Mojo on these karma issues, but in this case I would say Blacksox did not do anything wrong because he did not know there were coins in the reject slot until after the people left. To say otherwise would mean he would have a duty to warn everyone using the machine to check the reject slot, which is not his duty. Even though he did not see them check the reject slot, he did not know whether there were coins in there or not.

I will give an example of what I mean. I have had it happen a few times where I go to use the machine after someone finishes and I find some coins in the slot. After removing them (and checking for silver coins ) I will give them to the person after they cash in their ticket and walk by the machine to leave (if they are still in the bank when I find the coins). They always are thankful even if it is only a few cents. I would feel bad taking it if they are still in the bank.

On the other hand, if they leave before I check the reject tray, I am not going to go running around the parking lot looking for them. At that point it is "finders keepers" in my opinion. That is what it sounds like happened to Blacksox.

A slight distinction in the matter but an important one I feel.

Actually any number of previous people may not have checked the reject tray. Personally i usually tell the peeps b4 me to check. I often get enough when i fill the machine and clean out the tube leading to the tray.

Moral Dilemmas abound.

Sort of reminds me of an interesting (and profitable) occurance at the West Palm Beach airport. I was in a news shop buying a magazine or some such, and I was on line behind an older woman. After she completed her transaction and left, I was paying for my item when I spied a paper bill amidst the candy below me, which is where anyone paying would be standing. Rather than ask the shopkeeper if it was his, because of course he would say it WAS when it clearly had been dropped by a customer, I palmed it and walked out. Outside the store I looked and it was a $100. bill! :o I looked for the old woman, but she was gone from sight, and, let's be honest, it's an airport and I have a plane to catch. I wasn't going to run frantically looking for her when I didn't know for sure she had dropped it - I didn't SEE her drop it, I swear - and I wouldn't know where to look for her regardless. Now, I would feel bad taking some grandma's pin money. Had I SEEN her drop it I would be the first one to return it - I often return money to clerks in stores when they hand me too much back. That said, I had no idea whose this was, and I'm sharp enough to realize an opportunistic clerk isn't going to say it's NOT his (probably) when some travelling fool hands him a Benjamin.

Moral dilemma? Questionable ethics? Finder's Keepers?

Or is it all a matter of perspective?

For some reason, Michael Jackson's " Man in the mirror " just popped into my head.
