The ground where I hunt is pretty mineralized and I'm considering the 8.5" widescan coil for my Tejon.---Has anybody used this coil on the Tejon & if so, what do you think of it?---I already have the 5.75" widescan & am not interested in the 10X12" widescan or the 10" Lobo ST coil (for a couple of reasons).----Just "studying the 8.5 incher & would like to get something of a "report" on it (mounted on the Tejon) if possible.---Would it be worth purchaseing this coil to replace my 9X8 concentric stock coil in my mineralized/trashy ground?-------Thanks, BERT

In mineralized ground I give the widescan coils the edge. They handle the mineralization better and also have some other desirable characteristics. However in trashy ground, the concentric coils rule especially for coin hunting. They do require slow sweep speeds and overlap due to the small diameter of the field cone at depth.Trash and wide scan coils really don't work well because they bridge multiple targets with their rectangular, coil size field. They require very slow sweep speeds and varying angles of attack. If one is serious about detecting you need multiple detectors and a variety of coils to suit the hunting conditions.

Hey Joe, hadn't seen you in a while, welcome back hope all is good :icon_thumleft: (would've pm'd you but box is full)

Joe----I'm well aware of the characteristics of the DD's & concentrics haveing started metal detecting in 1975 & owned/used many detectors over the years.---You are absolutely right--there can be/are different "effects/results with different coils & detectors-FOR SURE!----But my sole question here was in the use of the 8.5" widescan on the Tejon.---Has ANYBODY used that coil (8.5") on the Tejon??---And if so, what do you see as the pros & cons of that coil (compared to the other coils currently available for the H.O.T. series)??----To put it another way--would that coil work equally well on the Tejon & Vaquero?--both of which have manual gb for both the am & disc. sides--(all other things being equal of course)

jharhed,

Hey, thanks for jumping in, nice to hear from you. I'm O.K., just busy with other things and wasn't able to get on the computer much. I need to figure out how to tell when that PM box is full!
Thanks for the heads up. Joe

Bert,

O.K., you know what's happening when it comes to the various coils. I think what it really comes down to is what sort of depth are you getting on your 9" X 8" coil, and How is that 5.75" widescan working in the trash where you are hunting. Yes, the 8.5 widescan will work equally as well on both the T&V. I have used the 8.5 widescan but not to a great extent, so I really can't make the comparison you are looking for. Some coils have a very definite advantage/use, but the 8.5 not so much. I hope I have helped. Joe

Hey Joe----Thanks for your response.---I'm about on the verge of giveing up on the 8.5" idea. :icon_scratch:---Is there a Tesoro detector & coil combo that you could recommend that excels at handling both iron (nails) & steel bottle caps well?---Might be a "tall order" to fill? :P---I've been doing a lot of testing with what equip. I have and haven't got that one figured out yet.--I know that DD's are bad on steel caps.---My problem is that my ground where I hunt is heavily mineralized AND I got the iron problem (in much of my areas)--where I don't have that--then I got the non-ferrous trash problem. :tongue3:--Don't we all? ;D----At this point--I'm concerned about trying to get a detector & coil "combo" that handles Iron well.----I've got a handle (of sorts) on the non-ferrous problem.-------Thanks in advance, BERT

Bert,

O.K., that's kind of what I was trying to say about the 8.5, I don't think it's going to do much for you. Looking at your "detectors used" list I see an Etrac. That's about the best detector I know of for handling mineralization and iron / bottle caps. Am I missing something? Getting back to the Tesoro's, have you ever tried the 5.75 concentric on your Tejon? That coil has fantastic separation, and it goes VERY deep on coins. Joe

Joe----Yes, I completely agree with you, the Etrac is excellent in what you stated (as are all the Explorer line).---I'm just trying to get a Tesoro set up the best way I can for when I want to "grab" a little lighter machine for a bit.---My other machines are excellent to but I have ALWAYS loved Tesoros.---I am a hopeless "tector nut"! ;D -----Good point about the 5.75 concentric on the Tejon--I had thought about that coil also & I'm going to check it out.-------Thanks again, BERT

BERT,

Nice chatting with you, good luck. Joe
