Tellers playing hard ball for coins

I’m 16 and I’ve started coin roll hunting again and go in every Saturday and get $100-$500 in coins. We’ll today i come in as usual and the woman says do you have an account expecting me to leave empty headed and next thing happens I pull out my debit card like it’s a trump card and she stood dumbfounded. I then asked if I could order boxes which they said was not possible. Are they lieing or telling the truth. They seem bothered but I don’t care. I have an account and it’s not like I’m bothering them coming in every Saturday for coins.

Banks are tightening their rules regarding ordering coins. Usually you have to have an account with them, but I have a bank or two that will order for me without having an account. (I was their local UPS driver for 27 years). Other banks like Chase, have taken out their coin machines so you can no longer return coins to them. It is becoming harder to enjoy the hobby of coin roll hunting. And yes, a lot of them will give you attitude, like its a big deal to order or carry a box of coins to the counter. I have been dealing with the same banks for 30 years though, and they know me well. My banking tellers are all very nice. (A box of a dozen doughnuts every now and then wouldn't hurt your chances of building a relationship) !

If you get that same reception again from the same or another teller, politely ask to speak to the manager--and you'll receive another dumbfounded response--but from either source you may get the response you seek.

I have a business account so I don't get any hassle but I try to go to different branches every other time. Sorry you gotta deal with that I think it's ridiculas Good luck my friend

I started coin collecting in the late 1950's when silver coins and wheat cents were still being minted. My grandfather and I would buy a few hundred dollars of rolled coins at the bank search them, take what we wanted and bring the rest back the next day. Then we'd buy some more. You could even buy silver dollars which the banks were glad to get rid of. We filled a lot of holes in our albums that way plus we kept any extras that had some numismatic value. The banks NEVER gave us an attitude about getting rolls of coins and were always pleasant to deal with. BUT that was then.....this is NOW and people just don't seem to be the same as they were back then.

I have a business account and they still give me the look of death when I go in. I lied and said the quarter rolls were for a kids MD thing. I am still a kid at heart, so maybe no lie after all. I go to 6-9 banks to pick up rolls, as I don't want to look too familiar with them. They're a bunch of jerks. My credit union has a whale of a coin counting machine and it's free for members! No re-rolling of coins here! I just snagged 20 2019-W Lowell National Park Quarters in BU today! After looking through $10,000 in quarters.

Keep at it, do not let a few problem tellers get in the way of your hobby!

Roger Ed! Back then the banks were there to serve us, now it's backwards. We get no interest because they all give their officers big bonuses and call it operating expenses!
