Tennessee Trio Hunt-1 & TENN JOSH Digs a Relic With U.S. in Big Letters On It

The Tennessee Trio recently secured permission for a new site from some landowners adjacent to a C.S. site where we have dug one CS button, several eagle buttons, a 1830 dime, and lots of bullets of different calibers. We planned a trip today but Dman had to reluctantly cancel at the last minute. Since Josh had already told the landowners to expect us, Dman encouraged us to go without him.
Josh and I arrived at the site a little after 8 am and spread out. I scouted an area for a little over an hour with no results. I met up with Josh who showed me a broken skeleton key he had dug. We went a little farther into the woods near a wet weather spring. We were about 15 ft. apart when Josh got a good signal on his F75. He held up a brass looking piece and said it may be part of a plate. I said that's real thin but looks like a heel tap. He came down to me and poured some water on it. I saw the border and thought I saw a "C' but I just got excited because it was the "U". I realized it was about 60% of the brass skin on a U.S. plate. I told Josh to go back to the hole as the other part may be there. He did and he already had the other part out on top of the hole. He was stoked. We hunted around the general area and he dug a dropped Sharps Carbine bullet and a few pistol balls.
I worked my way up the hill and hit a hot spot where I dug a perfect dropped .577 cal. Enfield bullet on top of a rock only one inch deep. I dug a dropped .54 cal. 3 ringer close by and yelled "hot spot Josh, get up here". He came up with me and dug a GS coat size eagle button with shank there. I dug a big chunk of campfire lead. By then it was 10:30 and Josh said he had to go and get ready for work so we headed to the truck reluctantly leaving signals behind. I dug the dropped 3 ring .69 cal. "Fat Boy" with thick wall indicative of CS .69s from that area on the way to the truck and Josh had to drag me off-LOL. We wanted Dman to get in on the fun there soon.
After Josh dug the eagle button in the hot spot I had found, he said "this is a great little spot I found" and laughed. I told him that he has been around Dman too much as that sounded just like something he would say-LOL. HH from the Trio, Quindy.

Dman and Josh have done the same for me Cody. We try to see eveyone goes home with relics every time we hunt. If someone doesn't have many relics thast hunt, we share signals. Sometimes it may obnly be a shotgun brass when they dig it but sometimes it's a button or bullet too. We are a team.
Josh asked me about why just the skin was there and we did look for melted lead and the hooks without success. My guess is that the Confederates may have melted the lead to mold bullets, someone used the hooks (if it was a belt plate) as shown in #6 in the pic from Crouch's relic book, and the brass skin was discarded. A local relic dealer agreed with my theory. Thanks Cody and HH, Quindy.,

Steve, it's possible that when the Confederates moved out in 1863 that U.S.oldiers also used that site then. We have dug several eagle buttons in that area. Josh dug a beautiful eagle "C" coat size button loaded with gilt near a campfire. The eagles could just be from captured Yankee uniforms too. Thanks for looking, Quindy.

He was excited TN2011. Heck, I was excited for him. It is so much fun to watch Josh dig relics as Dman can tell you. He gets so excited. I still get excited to just dig a bullet. If that doesn't excite a relic hunter, they need to get a new hobby. Thanks for looking, Quindy.

It's a big area Breezie but we will try to get every relic. The bullets range from buck 'balls to .69 balls and there are various 3 ringers, Enfields, Sharps carbines, and Dman dug a rare .58 cal CS Suhl Carbine bullet in the area.HH, Quindy.

Bill, this site is not a virgin site as it was hunted hard in the 1970s and early 80s but they had the old type detectors too. HH Bud, Quindy.

Quindy...which book is that??Thats the first book I have seen them mention the belt tightners. It is spot on correct. They were used with the two piece buckles. Also they have a picture of a "ladies type",sash buckle that I have seen dug out here.
That is a good theory.I have heard of that being done and can tell you in "our",period the guys were very handy with how the reused things....improvised.One just couldnt run to the supply tent!
We do that signal share as well, especially if we have several different types of machines. Its neat to see how each one reads. Its really neat since we have started running the Tejon's,since they get CRAZY depth. Our Whites machines often dont get any reading at all,on items that boom on the Tejon

Cody, it's one of the best relic books in print. It's "Civil War Artifacts-A Guide for the Historian" by Howard R. Crouch. If someone hunts CW relics and could have only one reference book, that would be the best. They are on Amazon and are about $45. The one I have has a 1995 date on it. HH, Quindy.
