hello all

I just bought a tejon for relic hunting some civil war sites. I have a set up question how to detect a loaded iron siite. I just recieved permission from a friend of mines father to detect his fathers house down the street from his house. The house was built in the 1830s and was a stage coach stop. My friends grandfather lived in the house until the late 1990s. The house was torn down five years ago and all that stands is two of the three chimneys. I went over to the house yesterday and started detecting and had signals every few inchs. I ended up with my primary coil set at foil and secondary set at tab. My question is how would you set up to cherry pick this to find coins and silver at first than i will have to go back a lot to dig the iron. This property is on about five acres. I could spend my life detecting this property. I would appreciate any help as I have never taken on such a large area with so much iron.

You got a strong machine.Well,You got a couple options. But when i go to a good site that i know i can go back to,I go in for the old silver and copper coins first.I clean them out.So i set my first disc a hair past the tab mark.It is so much fun plowing through the junk and getting the old coins.Or if you want to stick around more at first set disc 1 bellow nickel, the second disc at tab.On a signal, switch to disc 2,if the signal disappears, you are in the nickel range. If the signal stays you are in the coin range. If the signal cracks,You are in the pull tab range. If you learn that tejon you will really be successful.I just got the tejon.I had one some years back and had to get another one.Big pieces of iron will fool you.Do not dig the big loud signals at first.Go for the faint smooth deep signals at first. This method works great for me.Good luck to you. :-D

Thanks for the reply SpiritRelic. I did not want to miss some old coins. It looks like I will be spending a lot of time at this site. My friend just showed me a picture of the house yesterday with the stage coach at the side entrance to the house. It has been raining for a week down here. I will have to wait for it to dry out a little till I get back. I will try your settings and see what I get. I love the machine I just have to learn the language of it.

Agree 100% with Spirit Relic. Experiment! I can tune out most iron junk with Disc 2 set at about 1 o'clock on the dial. Iron sounds "clicky" on the tejon. Lead, brass, silver, gold is smooth. If you get a signal you're not sure about, remember the sound and dig it. Then note what you found and learn to either ignore or dig that sound. The Tejon is wonderful. Can't figure out why so few own it. I guess because it's a bit old school without all the fancy displays. I get just as much good stuff as my higher tech buddies, and usually dig LESS junk!

People don't want to take the time to learn it. I set disc #1 so I get a broken signal at foil (I hate digging chewing gum wrappers), and disc #2 at a broken signal at square tabs. Round tabs sound just like silver, it's hard to disc them out without losing smaller silver. Nickels and gold falls right between these two disc settings, if your finding nickels your going to get gold if it's there.
