Last night I had that feeling ... for about 30 minutes until I found out it was only a 106 year old coin. Last hole of the night last night and I dug what I thought was a large copper from 1809 ... turns out it was a 1909 British penny. I am still excited as it's my oldest coin to date.

Someone drilled it to make a necklace i guess? It also has some sort of gold sheen to it, like it was painted or coated??

I've also decided to post all the cool stuff I've found since my last finds thread on 10/9 ... I've had a stellar month I think and I'm totally hooked on the old stuff now. It's funny when you think you smell the silver in the ground LOL.

Old copper tube of some sort found in an old church's overflow parking lot. It was all rocky and tough digging. Anyone have a clue what this is or how old it is? It's about 2.25 inches long

I dug an ornate horn mouth piece, i think it is silver plated. H.N. Whites 60 ... seems to be pretty old based on some of the research i've done.

I found all six of these, the lesser crusty buffalo nickel below, and a silver rosie that's grouped with my silvers at one spot this past Monday night.

This is a first for me - dug two buffaloes one has a date of 1923 or 1925 not sure.

And look at these beauties! I found the silver Canadian dime dirt fishing sidewalks in an old part of town.

Any help figuring this out would be greatly appreciated it. I think it's lead and it is the same diameter as a dime. It seems to be a cap to something as the back has some sort of attachment but also has no screw threads. I am baffled. Found at a house that was built in the late 1800s

A beautiful old ornate (brass i think) pocket knife found at the same site as the British penny last night

First hole i dug last night, my first minie ball i think. it weights 30.9 grams with the dirt still lodged in it.

And finally, my unique rusty stuff and other neat junique items.

Is that an old rusty key? it was found at a known civil war camp along with other rusty looking horse shoe thing. Not pictured is the 3.5 pounds of camp lead i found.

Anyways, thanks for digging my digs! I appreciate any help identifying the lead griffon cap. Hope everyone is out digging and having fun and having a great weekend!

Those are some pretty heart pounding finds. Congrats! You have had a wonderful month and I would conjecture the best is yet to come.....

Thank you so much. I'm having so much fun too. 3 months in and I am already wanting to upgrade from my Ace 350

The copper tube you have pictured & asked about, may be an older lipstick tube. It looks like it may have been smashed a little, but I have found quite a few over the years & that's what it looks like to me according to the picture.

Thanks Trezurehunter. thats kind of what I figured too but i was hoping someone like you all would help confirm it for me:icon_thumleft:

Congrats on all the nice digs and your oldest. Nice silver and the cap looks like it may be off a canteen??, I have seen hex as well as round ones.

Re: The Mouthpiece
The H.N. White company was in business (manufacturing) from 1893 through 1965.
Though no longer in production, the company carries on-- dedicated to preserving it's history.
If you have a question regarding that mouthpiece, you might find the answer on their website:
Henderson N. White maker of King Band Instruments. The H. N. White Company.
or by contacting them; again, through their website.
Don.....

Thanks Inspector. Would a canteen cap be as small as a dime? It is literally almost the same size when I lay it on top of one. But I have not thought of that and I'm hitting dead ends everywhere I look.

The 1909 has what collector call original luster, not paint. It must have been in great condition when lost.

Thats a great idea Don. I think I will try to email them a picture and nail down some details.

Good to know Crusader, thank you. Oh how i would love to go digging with you and your dad some day!

dug 1909 home.webpdug 1909.webp

Here is the just dug im shaking picture and the im home and going to see picture lol

the best part is that this spot still has a ton of targets left. There are two high silver tones showing at 8+ that i cannot find yet. I have dug and dug the same targets twice and guess im going to get keep trying. Cannot wait to see whats down them holes.

this spot is a house that was built in 1920 and the whole property is being renovated. In two digs, about 4 hours total i have found the 1909 large British cent, the 1935 mercury, the old pocket knife, two almost wheat pennies, a 1940 nickel, and some modern clad. and the usual junk of nails, screws, bottle caps and pull tabs.

LOL, i tried to gently clean it as little as possible. i brushed it first with a dry soft toothbrush and when i still couldn't read the date i just went in carefully. I like a cleaned coin for my personal collection.

Very cool finds! From a trumpet mouth piece to silver. Congrats

I do the same but ...
I cut in half the toothbrush so I have a little bit stronger brush and I clean them under running water. You can try it.[emoji6]

I have found 2 English pennies now. They blow your phones off lol.
