My Credit Union just opened another branch which is about 10 minutes closer to my house. Went there on their "Soft" opening
yesterday to dump some dimes. They had a new high speed coin counter :hello2: which took literally 10 seconds to go through $200.00
in dimes. That is the good news, now comes the bad news which could signal and end to this hobby.

They have state of the art equipment in this bank as it will be the flagship for the county. Gave the teller my receipt for the dimes, she asked
how I wanted the change, I replied "Large Bills Please". She entered what I wanted into the computer and then I noticed there
were no trays on her counter, no forms, NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! This giant safe with a sorting device sitting next to her spit out 2 $100.00
dollar bills and the coin counter automatically spit out two cents (I threw the change from my car into the dump bag).

I just kind of stood there flabbergasted at what I had just witnessed. The teller is a friend who worked at the other branch in
our town. She started laughing when she seen the look on my face, told me that "THEY ARE CASHLESS". :icon_scratch:

All coins/currency/checks coming in are deposited into the mini-safe with the sorter, all expenditures are reversed from the safe to the sorter on top.
They have no access to any coin or currency by hand, it takes a branch manager to open the mini-safes and each teller had one.
If all the banks adopt this equipment our hobby is pretty much gone with the wind.

Enjoy while you can. :occasion14:

I think it's just CUs that do that. There is a local chain in my state that almost every single one of them have those kinds of things. They don't have fast/good/free coin counters, but they've had those machines for years. But that's why I don't hunt there, I dump there.

One of my CU branches I'd like this too. I dump there too.... No banks here have gone this way yet.

You're probably right that some day all transactions will be like this. Then we will have to retire from CRH I guess.... I think it's still a ways off though.

In the meantime... HSH!!!!!!

I can see this being the "end" of CWR's... at these type of branches. Merchants are still going to need coins... so banks will still need to order boxes. CRH'ing still lives! Makes for a nice dump bank though...

Have you checked to see if they'll sell you bags off the machine? Someone has to have access to it to swap the bags, and it's essentially the equivalent of CWR.

Nope, no bags at all. All coins go into a HUGE bin and that is swapped out with an empty one, locked and wheeled to the vault awaiting the pickup from brinks.

They're going to have a hard time filling merchant orders, or accepting deposits of rolled coins from merchants. I don't see this catching on.

I have seen this at the little banks in my area. They still sell me bags off the machine, but no teller trays for cash or coin.

None of that here that I have seen. Thankfully. But I still believe the end of CRH is on its way soon. But I won't go into the reasons why. There's been enough doom and gloom stuff on TV as it is. Don't need it here.

On a cool note while searching a box of dimes I found a offstriked double edged dime. The outer rim is offset to the left like a crescent moon, though the picture is fine. The rim on the left side actually has two lips to it. I can run my fingernail along both edges. probably not worth much but I was surprised that I picked it out from all the dimes.

Gotta go, Doomsday Preppers are on and I actually get a saturday off that I can watch them.

Hugs and Smiles,
Garoulady

PS- The one CU I have experience with WAS NOT business friendly....a union thing I think.. Dumped them like a democr...I mean hot potato.

My dump facilities are set up like that. I dump at a CU that has numerous branches around town. Free coin counters, and teller kiosks. No 'counter' in the traditional bank sense. You're literally standing in the lobby next to the teller.

But as has been stated above, merchants are still going to use coin, and that's precisely where I order from. I bank near the shopping / mall district. Lots of restaurants and smaller stores that don't have a Brinks truck delivering their currency, so they have employees depositing / picking up at that bank branch. Perfect order bank. been using it for years, and they love me. Well, me or the cupcakes I take in there........

Develop those relationships and work on buying bags off the counters... feel free to talk to the branch managers, point out how it saves them money in bagged change processing fees, and saves them money by not ordering boxes. Once you point out the savings, they're usually willing to give it strong consideration.

Protip; don't complain about the bags being off... EVER. You'll get cut off in a hurry. Buy a digital scale that goes up to 60 pounds and weigh the bags before you take them. If they're light, leave them. If they're on or heavy (Silver is heavier than clad) buy 'em.

EDIT: Just saw your post about the bin-style machines. Coinstars are like that as well... tough break.

I was out Chring the other day and ran across a credit union that had 3 electronic tellers! Now if you think that is creepy! I don't think it will catch though. No customer service is a bummer!

The BoA in Needles, CA is closing the lobby bank and going strictly auto-teller in January or Feb. Not enough lobby traffic, they say. There will be NO California bank within a 90 minute drive after that happens, and only 1 CU. BoA is going to loose a LOT of business to Chase, the closest bank, up the road in AZ a few miles.

IOW no customer service, but they are claiming it isn't needed any way, so........

Credit Union does not accept merchant accounts.

Well that is fantastic, My CU does not.

I don't use their services, but about half of the branches I dump at have some sort of merchant services. That's why I don't CRH there though. You can't see what they have on hand and they don't have rolls readily available. I do agree with you though, if this practice branches out to other banks, this would be the end.

TD Bank near me has these type of machines.
