In addition to the co-worker who found the halves for me today, a client came into the office with his change jar... a big change jar. And that's not all of it, there's also a box with the overflow. It's damn heavy, and I work out. I can keep anything cool I find so long as I give the rest back rolled up. It's a deal for him compared to paying coinstar fees. Hopefully there's enough in there to pay for the hernia surgery.

Update: Join the guessing game!

Let's do it Price-Is-Right style. Internet bragging rights go to the closest without going over. Be aware, the photo was taken with a wide angle lens, so it's bigger than it looks. I'll weigh it as soon as I lug the thing home.

Actually, lets make it three guessing games!

1) Guess the weight!
2) Guess the total face value!
3) Guess the finds in silver, wheats, or whatever else!

Feel free to hold off on #2 and #3 until after I report back on the weight, or guess right now to boost your genius cred!

Update 2:

I can provide a more detailed description of the jar. Total weight of the jar and contents is 25.7 kilograms (a little under my original guess of 60 pounds). The jar is plastic, barrel shaped and originally contained sourdough pretzels. It is 29 cm tall, 58 cm in circumference around the middle, 47 cm around the top and bottom, and the coins are basically overflowing from the top. I've also attached a better picture with a tanuki for scale.

Totals:
The total is $485.54. See this post for a detailed breakdown and list of keepers.

Re: A little help from my friends...

Cool pic. You should start a poll here asking people to guess the total cash in the jar. I'll guess $108.

Re: A little help from my friends...

I'll say $475 :laughing7:

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

Since it's Price Is Right style I have a question. If my guess is the closest without going over and is within $10 of the actual retail price do I win both showcases? :laughing7: Sorry, couldn't resist. Price Is Right makes me think of my grandpa who passed last year. We used to watch it together all the time when I was a kid. When he passed I inherited part of his coin collection.

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

$260, will contain at least 10 wheats, 1 silver war nickel, 2 silver dimes and a few foreign, just my guess. Hope there is more and that there is enough for the person's surgery!

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

I've updated the original post with weight and dimensions. So far I think all the guesses are quite low. I'm guessing for $670, no silver quarters, 2 silver dimes, 1 war nickel, 1 buffalo, 12 wheats.

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

Here are my guesses: $1747 face with 7 silver dimes, 22 wheat pennies, 1 buffalo nickel, 2 war nickels, 3 40% silver halves, 1 90 % half, and 1 1964 quarter

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

Um, I guess that it's a pregnant E.T.? Was I close?

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

The nipples are a nice touch....

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

$447, 1 silver dime and 4 wheaties!!!

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

$362.78

6 wheats / 1 silver dime / 1 war nickel

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

My guess is around $264.77 with 17 wheats (at least three are older than 1940), 12 pre-1960 Jefferson nickels (at least one is a 35%er), three silver dimes (at least one is a 1964), and one 1964-D quarter. ;D

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

$361.09

1 lonely silver quarter ;D

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

I'll go $121.12, with 7 Wheats ;D

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

I'm going to guess $409.58 and 1 quarter older than 1964, that is it for any good finds.

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

I've finished sorting by denomination, and have examined and rolled the quarters (at least, any that didn't end up in the wrong pile). I have pulled out some keepers from other denominations that I spotted while sorting, but they haven't been examined thoroughly.

The penny pile is enormous. We're talking serious Scrooge McDuck territory here.

Keep the guesses coming!

Re: A little help from my friends (join the guessing game!)

$85 in pennies
$20 in nickels
$36.40 in dimes
$108 in quarters
$10 in halves
Handful of Ikes/SBA
$4 in random foreign money
2 arcade tokens
1 replica of an ancient Roman coin
2 jelly beans
3 dead bugs
2 bingo chips
1 $1 Caesar's Palace steel gaming chip
Half a pencil eraser
Part of a Dorito from 1999
A fingernail
Something that looks like a Spanish Doubloon but is going to need further inspection to determine if it is real or not
1 Silver Quarter that was used in a Pac-Man machine in 1982
20 Wheat pennies (2 of which were buried in the Las Vegas desert for 30 years)
1 Franklin 1952 Half that was actually was used by JFK to buy milk in the late 50s
That's it and that's all
PS--I'll give my final guess on the overall value once we find out if the doubloon is real or not
