'THE MOUND" turns up more relics and a CW bullet

I hit "the mound" out in the farm woods at lunch today. (big suprise, huh ;) )
I came more prepared today with my camera and a larger shovel. I wanted to give you an idea of the area I am searching, but the pictures are kind of light.
Pix#1- Is of the dry creek below down in the woods below the mound.
Pix#2- A large indentation next to the mound & large oak tree.
Pix#3 & #4 are a few shots of the mound area I've been working. There is a layer of dirt on top of the rocks piled below.
Pix#5- Some of the wonderful rocks I have to dig through. :'(

My finds today on "the mound" were:

*A Musket ball (approx. 16-17 cm). I knicked the cr-p out of it, and turned it into Pac-Man. :'( Dang roots!
Is "musket ball" the correct term, or is this a mini ball? (I'm still learning)
Can someone give me more info on this little baby?

*A large 25cm flat button with a "D.C. & Co. - Double Gilt" back mark.
I'm thinking circa early to mid 1800's.
Due to the large size I thought I had finally found an old coin. I about soiled myself on this one. :o It's one of the largest buttons I've ever found next to two Colonials.

*Asst'd lead chunks.

*An old brass hinge with the #17 stamped into both pieces.

*Old padlock back. 1800's I'm guessing.

Thanks for looking,
MM

Nice pics on the huntin grounds, but i want to see pics of the finds ; :( Looks like a cool place to hunt though

Re: 'THE MOUND" turns up more relics and a CW bullet

I would like to see the pic of the button. It sounds like it could be Colonial-era.

Re: 'THE MOUND" turns up more relics and a CW bullet

Yes "musket ball" or "round ball" are the terms most used for these.

Re: 'THE MOUND" turns up more relics and a CW bullet

Sounds like a dandy button - cica 1780-90s Have you got a picture?

Just seen it, not a dandy button.

Re: 'THE MOUND" turns up more relics and a CW bullet

The rocks were definitely put there by human hands. From the location, and the rocks, and the Depression which is KEY....I believe that there was a structure standing on this spot and the rocks are part of the remains of it. I would be interested to see you dig down into the depression a couple feet by a couple feet and see if you find anything.

Re: 'THE MOUND" turns up more relics and a CW bullet

Sorry everyone. My computer whacked out on me and didn't take load all the pictures the first time around. The finds are posted now.

Yep, all that melted lead is what I told you the other night....it's called "Camp Lead" and is the spill over from soldiers making there minie and musketballs. Also, MM, your button... It looks like the back half to a two-piece button.....But if not, does the front have anything on it?

That's what I'll have to do. I want to see if anything is down there too. A pick should make quick work out of prying the rocks out. I'll wait until cooler, less humid weather though.
Thanks Josh.

Is there any size description with these like the 3-ringers (i.e. .58 cal.)?

Re: 'THE MOUND" turns up more relics and a CW bullet

Yeah, there are .58 caliber musketballs, .69 caliber musketballs, and there are other calibers that were used as well. Many of the revolvers like the Colt used round balls in smaller calibers as well. The caliber size is the only thing that really distinguishes a musket ball unlike 3 ringers AKA minie balls, that have distinguishing traits that enable us to ID what type they are and in many cases, where they came from.

Re: 'THE MOUND" turns up more relics and a CW bullet

That dry creek bed looks pretty good, too. A lot of people miss great finds in CW battlefield areas because they won't get down in the "wet" creeks. Have you scanned that area much?

Re: 'THE MOUND" turns up more relics and a CW bullet

Nice recoveries !! Looks like a beautiful peaceful place to hunt.Good luck ! HH...Panz

I am in agreement with Sentinel on this one. The depression looks to me like a very old cellar hole, or some kind of similar structure. This stuff you are digging now pre-dates the Civil War era.
You may go days without a great find on that farm, but I have the feeling that one of these days you are going to post a find that will astonish everyone. You are digging alot of the right stuff.

Thanks Plehbah.
I hope you're right. I've been hunting this farm about a year now, but mostly around the existing 1930's house. I just started to venture into the woods now, and the finds so far have been there too. Nothing fantastic yet, but I'm hoping it's out there somewhere. ;D
You may be right on a cellar hole. The rock I am digging looks like the foundation stone (made with sand?) from a structure that used to be next to the 1930's house. By the age of some of my finds over the last year, a lot are back into the very early 1800's. Unfortunately no early coins yet though. :'( Maybe that should be my goal for the rest of this year, to find an early 1800's coin out there? So far my oldest is an 1874 IH by a huge oak up by the house.
Wish me luck, and if you don't see me posting for a few weeks, SEND HELP! ;D

Shortstack,
I'm really waiting for to be sure the snakes and ticks are gone first. I had two ticks on me on these last two hunts. Those I can deal with, it's the snakes that freak me out. ;D
Instead of getting colder around here it's warming up! :'(
You can bet I'll be right down in those wet creeks and the marsh area too once it is safe. I got my boots ready. I did swing a small creek area earlier this week out in the deep woods, and was getting signals. I only had my small digger with me though, and couldn't get deep enough to find the targets.
By the way, is that a Mr. Natural avatar you have? I seem to remember something like that during my 70's years. ;D
Thanks,
MM

Hey, I live in Mississippi--snakes I can understand. ESPECIALLY Mr. Cottonmouth moccasin. Those boys are born with seriously bad attitudes. My avatar is one of the characters designed and drawn by a man named Robert Crumb back in the 70's. He's the guy who dreamed up the "Keep On Truck'in" cartoon figure that became the mascot of the custom vanners in mid-70s.
I recently snagged a Detector Pro Diver on ebay to use for checking creeks, branches, and river shallows. My ears won't let me dive, but I can wade with the best of em. ;D I got that puppy for $232.
